View Full Version : Anyone Had UTI after Cystocopy?

I had a cysto on Monday and was given CIPRO 1000 mg to prevent an infection. I started feeling something on Wed, Thursday was increased trips to bathroom with burning and by Thursday nite the pain and burn started with blood when I wiped and puss. Fri went to uro's office and said I needed to provide a urine sample as I was sure I had an infection. (I use the AZZO strips at home, so I don't waste my time with a negative culture).

The cysto exam was concluded with my bladder "looking fine." I had a hydro done 10 years ago, no tell-tale signs of classic pinholes. But many years of pain, urgency, frequency, negative cultures. My current uro says I have IC.

Many show posts of the hydro extension being the "sure-fire" diagnosis, however, in the IC handbook, there is literature on the fact that just because you don't have show signs during hydro, you still may have IC.

I wondered if the cysto brought on a flare along with an infection as the pain is more than my usual pain when I go through periods of what is believed to be IC (when I have pain like an infection, but the culture is negative.)

Your thoughts and comments.

Kayrol I got a UTI after having my last hydro with cysto done. I also was on preventive antibotics after the procedure but still ended up with a awful UTI afterwards, then the worst Yeast Infection I have ever had. And it is normal for an increase in IC symptoms in the days following those procedures. I hope you feel better soon.

I had the same experience Patricia did, unfortunately - I even was given preventive antibiotics, too.

And when the UTI hit, I wasted a month being miserable because I was so sure it was just a flare instead of a UTI because I thought - can't be a UTI, they gave me antibiotics.

When it was finally checked - not because I asked but because of a routine followup visit - I had a raging infection. Sheesh.

Blessings, Lori

Hate to repeat the two stories above, but the same happenned to me. I was on an antibiotic before the procedure and still got a UTI. My symptoms were bad for about a week, then I had trouble getting rid of the darned UTI, but after awhile, I found the right antibiotic that worked. (Yes, I had yeast after that too!) good luck.. liz

Any time we have an instrument or catheter inserted into the bladder, it increases the potential for an infection immediately afterwards. That's why antibiotics are frequently given with bladder procedures. If you are having UTI symptoms, I suggest you have your urine checked.
