I have been suffering with IC for over 20 years and have also had kidney pain(back pain area under the rib cage) and wonder has anyone else had this with their IC.?
Hi,
I have read of some on here with that type of pain. If this is a new symptom you should get it checked out. Also if the pain is worse than it had been, could be something new going on.

Hi, I sometimes get kidney pain with my flares and ic and I know when I have a kidney stone. If it is something new, I would get it checked out by a doctor. Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

I do get flank pain, even though my kidneys are o.k. and I don't have stones. Strange IC symptom, but I guess it does happen to some ICers.
Hugs and love,

As far as I know....you should NOT have true kidney pain with IC. I would make sure you do not have an infection, stones, etc etc. After these are ruled out....well I have another idea.
I would not consider this flank pain kidney pain. Have you discussed it with your uro?? I truely believe that all ICers can benefit from a Physical therapy eval. Not all ICers have Pelvic floor dysfunction, but after years and years of feeling like you have to pee all the time (and therefor clenching those muscles) certain muscles become weak, and other muscles (low back, abdomen) work harder to try and compensate. I have done two courses of PT and was greatly helped by both. Recently, my left hip (usually my problem) was bothering me and my PT exersizes just werent cutting it. I went to my chiropractor, and he in one fell swoop cracked my lower back in a way I was not aware my back could go!!! Turns out, after a few months of stress, and walking all over this city....my back was as tight as can be, and the pain was radiating down my gluteus into my leg, and starting to feel like sciatica.
I am not suggesting you see a chiropractor, unless you feel as though you want to, however I am suggesting you discuss this with your Uro or Gyn and be evaluated for PT. The flank pain, although in the same spot as the kidneys, could be muscular, and may be able to be taken care of with some exercises and a muscle relaxer if neccesary.
Good luck!! Let us know how you do.

Laurel,
Like you I have been having pain in the kidney region and yet my urine culture and CT are negative. My uro today has suggested I try Neurontin, an anticonvulscant, that helps to mask the nerve endings (for pain). If you go on the board to antidepressants section, there are quit a few other people who have tried it and give feedback. Hope this helps!

I'm pretty new at this, but I too have the same pain. I just take it as a IC thing. I just have my husband rub my lower back at that seems to help but at times it seem deeper and It don't work. I wish I could help but I not experienced enough to know how too. Others here have been so helpful to me about my ?? Hopefully they can help you.
Take care

I get pain in my kidneys all the time. My doctor said its normal and it may be urine backwashing into my kidneys which happens with ic. Good luck!*

Flank pain has always been one of my biggest complaints. There have been times of being in such a big flare up and having such bad flank pain I have been admitted to the hospital for pain control. All the tests come back ok my Dr. says that is it just part of IC and how your body responds to pain.
Although, if you get to where it is not the NORMAL flank pain and wont go away dont hesitate to get it checked cause it is possible that you could be over looking a kidney stone or other problem.
Hope you get to feeling better *hugs* grouphug

I also have the pain. It's bad enough to keep me in bed for days. I've had all the tests available and there is nothing out of the normal so it gets to fall into my "IC pile" cussing

Not sure if I'm feeling kidney pain. I feel a sort of pressure like a stiff muscle about 4 inches above my waistline and about 2 inches just left of my spine. Once in a while I feel a strong pitch like a spasm. I'm thinking that the kidneys are located lower. I'm I right?

Oh, I have this too sometimes. Mostly just short "pinching" sensations like you said. I always figure it's some little kidney stone working its way down because I've had tons of small and medium sized kidney stones in the past few years and sometimes they get stuck, sometimes they go through without many problems. But I just figured it was another little stone passing or something, didn't even connect it with IC...
Love, ICY
