Hi everyone... I was just wondering how many of you actually have urethral burning, either all the time or during urination?
I don't really get it and I'm wondering if it is atypical not to. In fact, even during UTI's I don't get it. This might sound like a good thing, but it is actually not... in the past, because there's been no burning, by the time I realized I had a UTI it had climbed all the way up to my kidneys and I was deathly ill.
The only time I've had it is when I've been dumb and decided to have sex while my symptoms are flaring up... in that case I got urethral burning twice, and bad!! Very weird. However, I do have pelvic and back pain/pressure, very frequent urination, and sometimes, a sensation that my bladder and urethra are "tender", usually during urination but sometimes just sitting here. It just feels weird....

Hmm I don't really get urethral burning, it just feels really hot when I urinate, like I'm peeing fire sometimes. Hard to explain. But I keep a cold water bottle that I can spritz after I use the restroom so the burning sensation goes away.

The only time I get what I would call burning is if I eat or drink a trigger food or have an infection.

My primary symptom is urethral burning and I don't mean just burning only during urination, I mean all the time. Pelvic pain is secondary to the burning and that seering feeling makes me crazy. I do take pain medications that help take the edge off. My Uro/Gyn that I had in Utah said that primary urethral burning is stubborn and difficult to treat but she had no idea why. I have one other IC friend that experiences the constant fire down below and is just as miserable as I am.
I hope this helps.

Lisa, My primary symptom is also ureathal pain
and burning. I refer to it as a feeling of a
big ulser between my legs. I also have a lot
of pelvic and rectal pain. Everyone seems to
experience different problems. My prayer is
that each of us will fine some kind of relief.

My symptoms of pain and burning are always worse after I urinate. Sometimes I get it while I am urinating, but the worst is afterwards.

It's hard to explain, but it feels "burn-y" all the time during an IC flare.
It's a different feeling than if I had a UTI. For me, if or when I have a UTI, I will have a distinct severe, sharp burn at the end of the stream. That's how I tell the difference, and whether I need to get a culture or not.
Take care, Carla

My daughter (6 yrs old) also often complains of urethral pain, during flares and UTI's. This is usually her primary cause of discomfort. Now it is difficult to know if UTI is cleared up or if this is still the IC flare. I was beginning to worry that maybe she also has vulvodynia (SP?)but maybe this burning just goes along with the IC.

I am relieved but puzzled. One of my main symptoms has been urethral burning and since I started on Elmiron (only 2 weeks) I have not had any burning. What does anyone think? I feel totally different (in a good way) than I have in a long, long time down there.

I have some mild urethral burning when I am flared. if it is BAD burning I know it's a UTI, but mild can be part of my flares.
October - Elmiron helped relieve my burning so I guess it could be helping you earlier than most. :)

I posted about urethral burning on the "Not Diagnosed Yet" Board about a month ago. I've had urethral burning since the end of December. I had a vaginal hysterectomy in September. No frequency, no urgency, no sensitivity to food, no additional burning during urination. I've seen my urologist twice. During the first visit I asked her about IC and she said that it wasn't that because IC is a "bladder disease" and my problem is urethral. She said if I was a man she would think it was prostatitis. I don't want it to be IC but I do want a correct diagnosis and treatment plan. I've been taking antibiotics for about a month and was feeling somewhat better except that now I'm keeping a yeast infection and that burns too. She has scheduled a cyctoscopy at the hospital with anesthesia for 3/19 but at this time doesn't plan on hydrodistention; just looking in the urethra and bladder. I don't know what to believe at this point.

Hmmm, when I started this thread I hadn't really experienced much urethral burning, except a few times after intercourse it burned during urination the first time I went afterwards.
Well, this week, I experienced it for real. I think it started because I was on a business trip and drank different water, ate different food, and then did a big no-no and had a few sips of red wine at dinner one day. Red wine is well known for giving me headaches, but apparently now it attacks my bladder too. The burning started the next morning. It lasted for 4 days; a lot of times it really didn't get worse during urination, it was just constantly there. I get hives a lot from allergies, and it really felt like I had hives all over the inside of my urethra and bladder!
I was about to go and get tested for a UTI, but then the burning/bladder pain went away after I rested for a day and drank lots of good water, and now I'm back to just plain old frequency. I guess it was just a really bad flare, but it certainly was weird.

Jeanababy - I can't believe how much you sound like I did. My burning started about 3 years ago. It didn't burn when I went to the bathroom but all the rest of the time. I had one doctor tell me that it was dryness and to use Replens - that seemed to help some of the time. This past summer I started having frequency with no sign of infection so my doctor sent me to a uro who did a cystoscopy (no hydrodistention). The uro determined from my symptoms (burning and frequency) that I have a mild case of IC. Anyway, I've been on Elmiron for a month and after 2 weeks the burning was gone and my bladder is feeling normal. In addition to the Elmiron I have been going for pelvic floor therapy. Personally, I think that this has helped more than anything. With your hysterectomy your pelvic floor muscles are likely weak. The physio did an internal feel of those muscles and as soon as she touched the ones in the vaginal area I felt that burn. Anyway, if you decide to try this route make sure that you find a physio who specializes in pelvic floor therapy. If you want any further info don't hesitate to PM me.

Yes, Yes & Yes I have burning. It comes and goes. Sometimes it is very painful and other times just irritating. This week was bad so I went into my Dr.'s and gave a urine sample. But my sample came back clear. I think it was just becaue I had a hydro on the 14th and my bladder has been extremely irritated. I am thankful to be feeling better today. blink

I also have the urethral burning and has been awful at times in the past...it comes when I eat or drink something I shouldn't...and we know...there are lots of those....but if I eat exactly right and drink only milk and water...and take prelief...I can be symptom free.
