If you have trouble going to a gym you might want to try some exercises at home. I've been lifting weights for a long time at various gyms (thankfully my IC is not so bad - but is annoying - so it never prevented me from doing exercise), and decided to research other exercise methods this summer. I found out about several exercise systems based on similar principles that you don't need weights or exercise equipment for at all:

Coming from someone who has been using weights for a long time I was quite skeptical, but I've maintained my muscle mass and even improved in some areas of my body while using these exercises exclusively for the past 2 months. If you still want to use weights you can incorporate those as well, but I'm done with weights for good myself. Certainly a big upside is no longer needed a gym membership or having to take time out for going to the gym, which can certainly help with keeping an exercise routine.

Just to piggy-back on this post:

I just finished a handout for our employees on exercises that you can do when you travel. I put it on my website for all of you, in case you are interested. I realize that some people may be able to do more exercises than others, but it is a start.

PS: This computer that I am on doesn't like pdf files, so I uploaded it to my website as a Word document. Let me know if it is corrupted or anything, please. If so, I will try to load it with a different machine.

JJ78 what are the exercises you found? I used to do 45 minutes cardio(6days per wk) and 30 minutes free weights(4 days per week). Now I struggle to walk 20 minutes per day and every time I do weights I seem to get worse with pain or just all my energy walks out the door. This is exasperating, especially
since I used these muscles here on the farm unloading feed, cleaning stalls, setting fencing. Now I'm SO weak! What are you doing to maintain muscle mass?
