I guess I've proven myself wrong and that elmiron is absorbed into the system when instilled. I originally had to stop elmiron because it was actually making me worse but among other things, it really affected my esophagus giving me spasms and burning. I started a trial of instills a month ago and those same symptoms are coming back, waking up at night with chest pain/burning. I stopped them for a week - went away. Tried one on Thurs. and they came back on Sat. I hadn't gotten any relief yet anyway so have decided to bag elmiron instills and just do weekly solu-cortef that hasn't done much either but until something better appears...
How disappointing, Dianne. I'm sorry the instills are having the same effects the oral doses did. :(

Dianne how awful. I cant believe that it will still give you the same side effects as if it were taken orally :headbang: . I hope the weekly solu-cortef will bring you some relief....

Hopefully the SoluCortef will help. It's a fairly gentle, soothing solution for me; hope it is the same for you.
Warm hugs,

I was getting a lot of chest pain and burning with the Elmiron but when I started taking a Zantec once a day these symptoms disappeared. I did that for about three weeks and then slowly weaned myself off of the Zantec and the pain has not reappeared. Hope you find some relief soon.

I am glad that My new uro has suggested heparin instills will start those in 6 wks. I know I can't tolerate elmiron orally took it for a month it caused my ulcer to bleed. My ulcer meds didn't work .

To Dianne
No I did not stop and am currently still taking Elmiron. The chest pain has stopped. I feel a little better and hoping over time the Elmiron will kick in and my bladder symptoms will be more manageable. I would like to add that I did go into the hospital for tests concerning the heart pain. It did turn out to be very bad indigestion from the Elmiron. With the introduction of Zantec I was able to tolerate the Elmiron. I weaned myself off of the Zantec and am now able to just take the Elmiron with no more pain.

I had posted some messages in the Elmiron oral with Elmiron instills. I couldn't take Elmiron caps because my throat was swollen for 2 weeks. I started Elmiron instills in July and my throat felt the same way. The uro said that the instills can still leak into the bloodstream but it was important for me to keep trying the instills. Now, I have them done every 2 weeks for 8 weeks instead of every week for 6 weeks. I am given Benedryl as soon as the instills are done.
I also went to an ENT doctor to see if something else was causing the swollen feeling. The nasal scope did not show anything wrong. I was referred to a GI doctor with whom I still need to make an appt. I just want to rule anything else out.
