I have had IC for about ten years. It has been a terrible ordeal getting the proper diagnosis, under going diagnostic procedures, the sleepless nights, the unrelenting severe burning pain in my bladder ,the time spent in Dr.'s offices, and the depression. One day my local pharmacist mentioned that his wife "used to have" ic.I assumed he was widowed or divorced. We talked more over the next several weeks and I found out not only is his wife alive, but she no longer takes any meds for her ic symptoms. He told me about the medicine which helped his wife so dramatically. It is called Cytotec-generic(misoprostol). It's normally used to help people prone to or with stomach ulcers. It's my understanding, it helps the lining of the stomach function properly. In ic,the mucosal lining of the bladder seems problematic.I guess, the medicine helps the bladder's lining work better. I've been on Cytotec now for a little over two months and my frequency, urgency, and pain have improved by ... 70%.The change is quite significant.I have been taking long-acting morphine for the severe pain of I.C. This week I went to my pain management Dr.and asked to get off the medicine: We've started the process; I really am amazed how much this medicine has helped.I'd like others to here my story of hope. sincerely, Alicia
Alicia - Someone else here several months ago spoke of his wife using that. Norman maybe? Or Howard? I can't remember - but if you did a search on the drug you could probably find the old posts. :)

it really helps.Norman Smith has posted about cytotec before.Norman is my neighborhood pharmacist. He's also a HERO in my book. The only side effects I noticed at a dose total of 400 mg was some gas(mild) and stomach upset(mild also). They're minor compared to the severe burning that never seemed to ease, constant trips to the bathroom, living with a heating pad-day and night and sitting in steaming hot water baths.I don't know how well it can help others but it has impacted the quality of my life. I had basically become homebound because of IC.Then I got a University afliliated pain management Dr. who stopped the pain.Being on stong 24 hour a day narcotics has a whole set of problems(constipation, tiredness, tolerance) I like the ideal this med might actually be helping the lining of my bladder.Anything thats end the suffering of IC.Best wishes to everyone. In kindess, alicia
