I am newly diagnosed with IC. Been very overwhelmed with trying to figure out what to eat and dealing with the pain.

I used to dye my hair with a home dye, a No Ammonia dye, but now I am reading the dye box, because of having IC, and it has a lot of chemical names on the box listed. I am afraid to use this dye for fear of my bladder absorbing it? What do other people who have to dye their hair do, as my hair is turning more white everyday.

I have my hair highlighted at the beauty salon without problems. Don't know if a home kit would be different.
Hope you get some answers soon!

Hi Linda -
Welcome to the ICN boards!

As far as hair color, I use Clairon Nice 'n Easy at home to "re-blond" with no problems.

I sure dye my hair but you wouldnt know it lately!! I've had a bottle sitting on my bathroom counter for weeks now and havent had the energy to do it. I've never noticed a correlation between the hair dye and my IC. I've never even read of an interaction but I guess it's possible.

My suggestion to you is if you use an over the counter product, just make sure you dont rub it in, dont scrub your scalp with the dye on your head, and you will absorb very little of the product.

Everyone is different, I hope it doesnt bother you. Makes me ALMOST motivated to go do my hair...almost

Welcome to the board.

Hi Sandy. I usually rub the dye quite a lot into my scalp, because like you, I don't get to doing it unless I have left it so long and then say to myself I can't leave this any longer. I say to myself that I am starting to look very old with all this white hair. I have been rubbing it quite a lot before I had the IC because I didn't want to miss any spots. I do understand what you are saying about keeping the absorption down to a minimum. Boy the IC just changes everything I would say. It's frustrating.

I dyed my hair for years and years after I was diagnosed --- so long that when I let it grow out, it is totally white! The dye never was a problem for me.

Hi ICN Donna. Thanks for your post. The feedback to my question has been positive about hair dyeing from all the kind people who have answered me. That's encouraging. I am so glad I found this board, to be able to communicate with other understanding IC people. I am so new to this disease. Still trying so hard to understand what I can or cannot do or eat. It's so challenging and frustrating.

Just getting completely off the hair dyeing topic, I also have a great deal of trouble with constipation. I am eating flax seed, which helps a little. Is it safe to try prune juice? Not sure which foods or juices are low acid. I've tried blueberries and watermelon and they both seem to irritate my bladder. I sure hope this Elmiron helps me. Still on my 2nd month of that pill. I also have tried honeydew and pears. Those 2 may be ok but that's about all.

first of all... :welcome:

NO, I have never had a problem with dye.

Sometimes it's just your body getting adjusted to the meds that cause the constipation. Can you eat anything that's loaded with fiber? I eat a cereal that's all natural (kashi brand) and it is loaded with fiber which helps me. Blueberries and pears help too. Never tried prune juice in fear of the
vitiman C.

If it gets really bad, your doctor can perscribe something for you. I know when I was in a really bad state and taking my vicoden, I was having problems and she perscribe some glycolax powder. It is VERY gentle, so gentle that she has perscribed it to childern. My husband was having a problem, and he took two doses of it, and he was back to normal.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

I've dyed my hair too and never had any trouble with the dye. I've gone from real red (the deep red in the Pantene color-specific shampoo ads in magazines) back to my original color of brownish red over the years because I got sick of worrying about roots, and in the summer sometimes I get a few lighter highlights around my face at the salon. No problems with either home dyes or salon stuff! :)

Thanks for your reply Sarojini. I appreciate your advice very much. I'm feeling more confident about hair dyeing now, especially since you mentioned home or salon dyes. I went into your wedding website. Wow, a very beautiful site. My husband and I have a website too at www.krparkes.com That's what my husband does.
