Hi all! :hi:
Tomorrow, my boyfriend is getting all 4 of his wisdom teeth taken out and I'm on bedside nurse duty for the weekend. He's been taking care of me for the last year with all of my bladder issues, and I want to make sure I take care of him this weekend at least half as well as he's taken care of me. :)
So, I have a quick question. :hmm: For any of you that have had your wisdom teeth removed (under general anesthesia) or have taken care of someone that has ... can you give me any tips and advice on how to take care of him??? :help:
Thanks!!!!

My only tip when he gets ready to take all the packing out make sure it all comes out. When I had mine cut out the dentist packed it full and I left some in and then got a really, really bad infection. I could not eat for weeks. And make sure he takes his pain meds....I wish him luck

Angella,
Good luck this weekend........I hope he isn't a bad patient for you. :)
About 7 years ago I had all my wisdom teeth taken out at once. Make sure he doesn't spit very often or sip from a straw...this causes dry sockets and are very painful. When I felt like I needed to spit, I pretty much tried to force most of it to the front of my mouth and wiped it away....pretty gross and very unlady-like but I was bent on not getting anything more painful than how I already felt.
Take care of you too.....it sounds like a good weekend to just curl up together and watch movies!! :)

When my son had his removed, the oral surgeon advised me to have some tea bags on hand so if he did any bleeding, we could put a tea bag in his mouth and he could bite down on it. It worked very well.

I had all four of mine removed under general a few years ago. You've gotten some good advice; no drinking from straws or spitting hard, take the antibiotics the oral surgeon may prescribe, and, if he prescribes an antibacterial mouthwash, have your boyfriend just gently swish it a little or just hold it in his mouth for a few minutes -- and then lean over the sink and let it drain out of his mouth so he doesn't have to spit.
Also, make sure you have lots of mushy food around for him -- applesauce, mashed potatoes, pudding, etc. He will likely not want to chew for a few days!

Popsicles! And the mushy food... make sure he takes the pain meds around the clock... even if you have to wake him to take them. When my daughter had all 4 of hers done, I set an alarm every 4 hours (per her prescription, his may be different...) and had her take the meds. We missed it once by an hour, and she was in absolute agony until it finally kicked in an hour after that...
Make sure there is ice in the freezer, to keep the swelling down. All the other advice is great too... and in the end, you'll both do what works for him, since all of us are different.
I also got my girl a little "I Love You" gift, a plant and a really soft teddy bear angel that she could snuggle and "cry" to. Most men won't admit it, but they love "cuddly" gifts too... since they're all big babies! At least he'll know you do care, even if the teddy bear isn't really his "thing".
Good luck!

Lots and lots of ice cream and milk shakes eaten with a spoon...not a straw. Not only does it taste great, but will sooth those sore gums. Now mind you, I hang on to any reason to have ice cream and this was the best one in a long time when I had three teeth pulled all at the same time. I deserved that ice cream. It was owed to me and nobody was going to stop me from having all I wanted....Oh, I am such a martyr :D Just call me Saint Sharon. Okay, okay..maybe more :evilsmile than  :lmao:

Good morning,
I just wanted to affirm some of this advise and add to it. No drinking from straws, or smoking. They will tell you this before you leave the office. They told me, but did I listen???????? Noooooooo, that would have been too simple. I got 2 dry sockets. Please tell him to do whatever it takes to keep those clots in place until the healing begins. Dry sockets are weeks of hell. Hope he has success and I am confident that you will take good care of him.
