Last week I went to the Dr. and found out that my pain was from a UTI, well, I went on antibo., Fri. I noticed that it was getting harder and harder to pee. Well, Sat., morning came and I couldn't pee at all. I went to the ER and had to be cathed. And man they don't do it the nice way either. I wore it until Mon. morning. Call my uro and saw her, she said that the medicine was working on the infection and wanted to do an instillation. Well, here goes another cath. but I finally got rid of the burning pain but I still can't pee. I have to go all the time and I strain so hard that I swear I'm gonna pop a hemrroid, and I never get it empty.

Has anyone else had this problem
HELP :help:

Well I hope you are feeling better soon. You really should discuss this with your Dr.

Omigosh! Straining is not a good thing to do. It will only worsen the problem. I suggest you talk to your doctor about learning to self cath. It's much, much easier and helps give a sense of security.

I hope you're feeling better very soon.

Well, I am doing much better today. I think the problem was that I was taking Ditropan and it caused me to have retention. I quit taking that and I have finally began to pee without straining so hard. I still have to wait until I have to really go before I will pee good. Last night I slept without having to get up but one time SWEET!
I guess I could give some history of me and my IC.

I was diagn. in May 2003 when I was 24. Took 1 yr. before I was diag.
Had a cysto, took Elmiron for 6 mos.
This is the first time since then that I have had a major problem with my IC.
I have been soooo fortunate.

All my problems seemed to happed after I had my son in 2001.

I have been to ER several times cuz I just couldn't urinate - no matter how much water came thru faucet, taking warm baths, rubbing my back. They would drain anywhere from 500 - 800 cc of urine.

After too many ER visits, my uro's nurse said if I continued to go to ER my insurance may start denying the claims - so they finally taught me how to cath at home/work/whereever. I am a pro at it now ... unfortunately!

When I was at ER 3 wks ago the nurse wouldn't let me cath myself - she needed it to be sterile, which meant she had to do the iodine wiping and insert cath. I was so tight/spasms she had difficulty inserting that tube which just made me spasm more! This time they took 400 cc after I had just tried to go and was only able to give them 25cc.

I too noticed that some meds cause me to go into retention (see list below).

Glad you can pee again! It's amazing what other people take for granted - being able to pee unassisted.

Hi Arose , I have suffered severe urinary retention and had to be cathed a few times and sent home on a foley catheter . I am sorry for what you are going through . You are in my prayers. My uro put me on a bladder med that helped me a little bit it is called urecholine. You might want to talk to your Dr about meds for retention.

Take care

Thanks again for your replies, as of this weekend I am doing great.
My IC pain is starting to go away, I am still staying away from things that would irritate it. My husband, son and I went to the Bullnanza Sat. We had to drive for about 2 hours to and from. I didn't even have to stop and pee, I was so shocked. I didn't drink anything much the whole time but it sure was nice.
I used to have the urgency and frequency during the time I was diag. but not now.

I was explaining to my husband the H*** that people go through with IC and the horror stories that I have seen on these boards and how fortunate I was now not having many problems. I need to be thanking God that I still eat what I want, drink what I want, don't have embarassing situations like most, and are not on any meds. (besides this past week)

My heart really goes out to you, the ones who are still in agony, taking so many meds that it drives you crazy. To you, I pray that God helps heal you.
