I was diagnosed with IC in September 04 and have been taking Vistaril (and Ditropan) ever since. I have just returned to Australia for a couple of months (I live in New York City) and my doctor here said there is no direct equivalent to Vistaril or Atarax (Hydorxyzine) available here in Australia. She suggested I take the same dosage (25mg) of Phenergan (Promethazine). I was wondering if anyone in Australia takes an antihistamine for their IC and if Phenergan is one of them. If so, is it effective?

Hello Magrone
Welcome (back?) Sorry that I can't help you with any information about Phenergan as I have not used it for these reasons. Perhaps someone else here can help.

Phenergan is used a lot for nausea and vomiting...it's main side effect is sleepiness and dry mouth. I've never heard of it used for IC....It comes in both oral and suppository forms.

Hi there! Phenergan is not a prescription drug, it is sold over the counter so it would not be prescribed for IC. However, my uro did tell me that some people have had success with Phenergan in regards to the IC. I personally take it occassionally at night if I am in a bad flare or in vulvadynia pain. It helps you sleep. 2 tablets should basically knock you out. I would not reccomend taking it during the day or on an everyday basis but you would have to speak to a doctor in regards to that.

It is supposed to "last" for 24 hours though.

Atarax and Vistaril are the same meds compounded differently. Atarax tends to come in little pills that are usually green or purple based on doseage and manufacturer. Vistaril (or hydroxizine pamoate)comes in capsules. Same meds, different reactions from a plethora of people. Vistaril is also given as an injection, usually with Demerol for example. It potentiates(helps it work better)the effects of the Demerol. Phenergan is a medication in the phenothiazines and comes in, as Sandy said oral or suppositiories. It is also given in IV form at the hospital. It can be sedating, especially when given concurrently with for example pain pills. The pharmacists will discuss these interactions and you pick up your scripts. I find that Phenergan works best for me. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Hugs,
Barb

I've never used phenegran specifically for IC, but have taken it for other things since being dx-ed w/IC. For me, phenegran really irritates my bladder. But, as I'm sure you know, we all react differently to meds so it may give you some relief. GOod luck, and I hope you feel better soon!

IV Phenergan did really bad things to me and my bladder when I had it right before an EGD. I have some generic Phenergan suppositories that I have not had to use yet so I don't know what they would do to me. Haven't been too excited about finding out. Never heard that Phenergan is used for IC. Praying that you find some wise counsel about this. Blessings of good health and wisdom.

In the US phenergan is a prescription medication. I take it to prevent nausea when I take pain medications. One thing I have found is that it substantially helps with my post nasal drip problem. I don't know if it helps with my IC, but it doesn't hurt.
