Someone said they feel bladder pain within 5 minutes of drinking a certian beverage.

I would like someone to explain how that is possible in the body.
I thought, when something enters the blood stream, ( can be in the mouth thru saliva or in the stomach and intestines.. ) It would take a certian amount of time to reach the bladder tissue.

If what you are saying is true, it puts a different light on my flair investigation.
If it is true that ingested liquid reached the bladder in minutes, the food that I ate 8 hours befor a flair can not possiblly be causing the flair.
I would need to be looking at what I ate within 2 hours or so of the onset of the flair........

It takes me about 1 or 2 hours to feel the effects of a beverage.

It takes just 5 minutes for a beverage to cause the pain to be worse. I too have wondered how that could be but when it happens I can feel the bladder filling up.

If you think of an allergic reaction to ,for instance, a bee sting, maybe the bladder can get the same response from food irritants? Just a thought...

I think it was me who mentioned that I have urethral burning within minutes of drinking. It happens only with wine or other alcoholic beverages. I have no idea why this happens, but I know it's for real.

I know there's a transcript out there somewhere (with Bev Laumann, I think?) that there's been reports of pain associated with food or drink before its even ingested....maybe the mind remembers pain and induces such feelings...ugh. Just what we need eh? Psychosomatic induced flares as well as physcially induced...no thanks! But I know I'd feel ill just looking at tomatoes or lemonade.....AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!

Anyways I hope someone else can remmber what transcript that was from...it was really an interesting snippet.

Another note: I tend to flare more from drinking (diet) soda from fountains rather than those bottled directly at the plant...my educated guess: I know that those "fountain guns" can be teeming with bacteria and crap and gunk if they aren't cleaned regularly...yuck! I'm positive its the "build-up" that makes me flare, moreso than the diet soda itself.

I haven't never posted this but yes sometimes with in five mins are a little longer i can tell if i put something in my mth was a no no i believe my bladder knows before it hits my stomach :( , but i can take a tums or if its a must no tums around i can mix up some water eight oz and a tsp of baking soda and drink it. (nasty stuff) but normally that will do the trick.

I can feel a tingling sensation in my bladder soon after drinking things like coffee and sodas. However, pain from eating and drinking can sometimes not show itself til the next day or so. That is why it's so difficult to pinpoint triggers.

Possibly the placebo effect in reverse, as Yvette mentioned......but more likely this is a manifestation of "how" different foods or drugs affect the bladders.

One way that food can affect the bladder symptoms is by the "junk" that is left over after the food is digested or metabolized. That junk is likely irritating to the damaged bladder lining (not necessarily CAUSING the IC). That process is likely to take many hours, often manifesting itself at bedtime.

The other way that food/beverages can affect bladder symptoms is a "chemical" reaction. When we eat things like chocolate, drink coffee, or take a drug like sudafed, the chemical reaction is nearly immediate. I remember when I used to be able to take sudafed, within minutes, my sinuses cleared. When I drink caffeine, the "charged up" feeling is nearly immediate. That chemical reaction is also happening in the bladder.

Does that make sense? :)

So... does that work for you??

There are very very few people with IC who say that food doesn't affect their symptoms. A survey done by the ICA showed that over 92% of people with IC have problems with food! The good news is that over 84% of patients say that changing their diet does help! I don't know of any other IC treatment that can boast those odds!! :)

Dito. Same thing here. About 2 minutes after taking just a sip of a margarita (even with prelief), I feel irritation in my urethra. I have no idea how its possible, but it manages! I havent had an alcoholic beverage in probably 4 months because of the irritation

I have to agree..if I were to drink something that would irritate my bladder it 'let's me know' by twinges, burning in my urethra. I have been drinking water for 7 years now...had a couple of glasses of blueberry juice on and off but that too causes symptoms. So water, spring water is all I drink.
Oh, and if I drink it cold it goes right through me. I drink room temp or hot water only. (sometimes a bit of organic honey in it).

So if you just drink water, are you pain free?

Where to buy blueberry juice?

I drink only spring water...one with a PH of 6.8 or higher (read about alkaline diets). I am on the 'bladder diet', very strick (chicken, safe breads, brown rice, burger, green beans, bartlett (pealed) pears, carrots, romaine lettuce etc) So when I'm good I am pain free now (after 11 months on elmiron). In otherwords, when my mother died 11 months ago, the stress put me into a horrible flare (In June). In August of last year the doc prescribed Elmiron. It wasn't until last month that I notices the difference and it is getting much better day by day (well, the days I don't have menstral pain anyway). So generally speaking I stick with water and have no pain now. I get urgency from the blueberry juice (which I buy at Trader Joes, also sold on this sites store) but sometimes I just crave another drink so I have a glass, no pain, just urgency for about 1/2 hour. Trader Joes and Whole foods is where I do most my shopping. I also found that organic foods are better for me (like the romaine lettuce, carrots). I'm at the point now where i can make my own pizza using boboli bread with virgin olive oil, topped with mushrooms and greenpepper then motz cheeze. MMMmmm.
