At first the lidocaine was wonderful for me, there is nothing like that numb feeling. Now I realize for me though the rebound pain is much worse???
I've had to quit using my gel and quit using it in my instills!! I am soo bummed!
I use Marcaine but it isn't the same!
Has anyone else had this??
Are there any other altenatives??
Thanks for your help!

Lidocaine does wear off fairly rapidly. I still do well with it for instills --- not sure what I'll do if it stops working.

For me it's not that it wears off but that the rebound pain is worse even worse! Frustrating!

Are you using it for instillations? If so, it could be the substance being instilled that is the problem.

I saw this thread and I have a question; do you have to have a prescription to get lidocaine gel? I have unfortunately had to start self cathing on a rare occasion and would sure like to have some lidocaine gel. I know that sounds kind of wimpy but the times that I had instills in the docs office, the cath was so much more pleasant (sound weird to say that about a cath). I requested the samples of the LoFric caths and they are great. Do you have to have a RX for the caths as well? Sorry to butt in on this thread, but I couldn't find any other appropriate place for these questions. Any info you can offer would be a great help.

I'm in NY State and need a prescription for both lidocaine and cath. Don't know why a person needs a perscription for a cath but they do. Don't feel like a wimp just because it is easier to do the cath with the lidocaine. Lord knows I would not have been doing the heparin/lidocaine instills without it. Way to much pain without it. I wonder if my uro doc would have samples of the lofric caths. Is that where you got your samples?

I've never had any rebound pain from the lidocaine. Maybe from doing the cath?

I have a script for lidocaine but can no longer tolerate it! For the caths too. I also recieved lidocaine in instillations too! I now use MSM gel on the cath. I love the intitial feeling of the lidocaine but for me I found that the rebound pain was worse so I put on more lidocaine. vicious cycle. It has taken me a long time to fingure it but we've tried my instills with and without it and the lidocaine definately gives me more pain later:(!
I've also found that I get worse at first after recieving the Kenalog at my Doctors office the usually lots better, but not the last couple times. I don't know what I'm going to do> I am thinking of asking him about trying the sodium bicarb and solu-coref.
I've read it is a milder steriod!...
