Take care Kim, and I hope things get better for you (and your mom!) soon! I know you didn't want to have to take the PST, but if it means finally getting your insurance company to cover the cost of Elmiron, maybe it will be good for you in the long run. In any case, I've got my fingers crossed and I'm praying for you!
Im sorry to hear that,,,,waiting is the worst part. I hope the next 2 wks go by really fast~~ :)
Take care~

Emilyrose-
I had that test and others today. Relief was not a word I would use to describe the procedures. There was no anesthetic, and when the potassium was injected, it was like having an extremely painful IC attack, or, like having acid poured into my bladder. The whole experience was painful, but I got a diagnosis, which hopefully makes it worth the pain.
After the procedure my doctor offered to inject lidocaine, or something like it, which helped a lot. Without that injection, I would have had one horrible day!
Good luck!

I am sorry you went through a rough time with the test. It does not sound to encouraging when I go to get my procedure done On July 8th. My dr. prescribed me pyruduim in the meantime for my bladder pain till I can have the procedure done and get elmiron covered. I am also on levaquin for a sinus infection I know I don't have a uti but it is bound to help my bladder some when I am under treatment for the sinus infection.

for the kind words and support.
Emilyrose, if you had the test on 7/8, I hope everything went OK.
Question for you Emilyrose, or [B]anybody[B] about pyruduim and urispas...
I have not heard of these medications for pain relief, and I am wondering; Are they really effective? I have a followup with my urologist in a couple of weeks, and I would like to discuss options for controlling pain; having something on hand in case of emergency (I cannot tell you how many times I have been stricken with what I thought were very painful UTI's while out of town). Are these medications similar to Uristat, that medication that changes the color of your urine? I've used it in the past, and not only was it not effective even with increased doses, it made me nauseaus (not to mention the "mess" factor).
Also, I have been prescribed Elmiron, but have not started taking it yet. Are there any side effects I should be aware of? I dropped it off at the pharmacy the other day, and not only do they not have it in stock, my insurance declined to cover it. I would like a "heads up" on any side effects from women who are taking this medication.
Thanks a bunch!

TracyPyruiduim is used for the pain of bladder stinging and burning . If you have that kind of pain Pyruidium will help you. As far as for my pottassuim procedure it was awful I felt like I was being tortured it hurt so bad . It seemed back into the flare I thought it was easing up a little yesterday and now it is back with avegence. I was in tears because it hurt so bad. I am hope ful I will be able to start elmiron on Monday .

Emilyrose,
Sorry you had to suffer Emilyrose!
I can completely relate to what you are saying. I was also nearing the end of an attack, and this test made it feel like I was back to the worst part, again. I asked for pain relief before leaving her office, and she injected lidocaine, or something like it. It worked like a dream! Instant relief, which lasted the rest of the day, and things seemed to stay under control after that. I drank lots of water to flush out the potassium, and since the pain was gone for the day I had no anxiety about "letting it all hang out"!
Take care hon,
Tracy

EmilyRose, I am sorry to hear you had such a prolonged reaction to this test and hope you will be feeling better very quickly. It does certainly show that we are all so very different in our reactions to tests, meds, foods, treatments, etc. We just can't predict how each person will respond.
Travelgirl, Uristat is just an over-the-counter version of Pyridium. They are the same with the exception of strength. Rx Pyridium is just a little stronger than Uristat. Like everything else, it helps some people but not others. There are other urinary anaesthetic and antispasmodic meds that can be tried if Pyridium does not work for you. Your doctor can assist you in deciding which ones might be appropriate for you to try.
The Patient Handbook on this site does describe many of the meds used so you might want to look at this information so you are familiar with the meds your doctor might suggest. Another resource that many of us find invaluable is the book The Interstitial Cystitis Survival Guide by Robert Moldwin, MD. It contains a pretty thorough description of diagnostic tests, meds used for ICers, treatments available, etc. You can purchase a copy in the ICN Shop or it is also available at Amazon, other Internet retailers and at some bookstores. Some have even found the book at their local libraries. I would highly recommend this book!
Hope you both quickly find meds and/or treatments that work for you!

Hi Tracey, Pyridium is the one that makes your pee orange, it used to make me real nausious too. Azo is an OTC brand w/the same ingredients, maybe a smaller dose will work, noticed also, I had to have a little something in my stomach when I took it. For me, it helps w/the urethral burning.
