Well the amount of pain is determined by what condition your bladder is in (just like how you react to acidic food). I screamed in pain...but they gave me a pain med and it was a very short severe flare up. I was in constant pain at the time so I was quite sensitive....the nurse said I was the most severe reaction she had seen in a long time....so hopefully yours won't be as bad. The best thing is is that it is usually pretty short lived since they take it right out and put a pain med in.

Thanks Katrina I have severe reaction to gatorade and flavored water. So I have a feeling I will have a bad reaction to this test. I could just strangle my insurance company lol. How are you feeling?

I got my final dx from the pst. It burned pretty bad! My dr put the rescue solution in right away. I burned pretty bad the rest of the day, but after that it was just back to my normal IC pain (which is bad all the time anyway.) I was glad that I did the test though, because I finally had a doctor who listened to me, and got my dx so I knew that I was not just crazy. (Which is how I had been feeling when it took so long to find out what was wrong with me!) Let us know how it goes!

I think Katrina's right, it likely depends on what kind of shape your bladder is in at the time of the PST.

When I had mine, I was having a good day. When the potassium hit, it burned. Like going from fine to flare in a split second. It wasn't totally unbearable but it had my attention enough that I wanted it out as soon as possible. They did drain it as soon as I reacted and put something in to numb the bladder. I'd have to say through the entire procedure, what probably hurt most was the insetion of the catheter. I didn't know it helped to relax and must admit I fought that thing it's whole way in!

My next fear was OMG, when this numbing stuff wears off am I going to be in a world of pain? Fortunately that didn't happen, though I was slightly irritated for about a day afterwards. Not enough to stop me from doing anything I wanted to do because of it.

Hope all goes well for you two!

Vicki
