Hi everyone my IC started flaring up today and at some points of the day I am hurting pretty bad I was wondering since I am in between Drs. and am wanting to go to the ER tomorrow if it doesn't seem to be relieving after trying the heating pad tonight what to say to the ER because the last time I went and told them about the disease I have and told them that I was in pain that I couldn't relieve no matter what I tried they looked at me like I was stupid I felt like I was 2 inches tall because of the way they looked at me I don't know if I should explain it differently or what to say but it is hurting in my bladder and back. Please if you have any sugestions let me know.
Thank you,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
I had success going to an "urgent care" place as opposed to an emergency room, where one can end up waiting for six hours or more. I told the doctor the name of my condition and suggested to him what medication I would like to have, and luckily he went right along with it. I was able to get relief right away. This might not work with all of them...this guy actually knew about IC. Anyway if you have insurance it might be a better idea to go to an urgent care place rather than an actual ER where you will be shunted aside in favor of people with gunshot wounds.
I hope you feel better soon.

When I have a flare, I call my own physician for help. And if he can't see me because he's in surgery or away, I can be seen by one of the other doctors there.

I, too, have found that the urgent care places work better. The last time I went to one with a UTI the doctor had just returned froma seminar where IC was one of the topics. He said they talked about lab rats with IC were actually chewing through their abdomens in an effort to relieve themselves from the pain their bladders were causing. Needless to say that doc was VERY helpful!

Well the urgent care dr wouldn't do anything for me because I smoke,I realize that it is a bad nasty habit and wish I could quit I want to but everyone around me smokes so its hard but that is no reason not to treat me because I smoke. I'm sure that she has a bad habit of some kind. I am waiting on my medical dr to call me now because I am still hurting and have seen daylight for 2 days now. This is so frustrating I wish just once they could feel like we do so they know how it feels and be a little more compassionate. Thanks for all of your responses I appreciate each and everyone of you for being here for me when I need you.
Thanks
Lisa

Geez Lisa, I'm sorry you were treated that way! You shouldn't have been left in pain, and shame on them for their lack of compassion!
I hope you hear from your doctor soon.
Hugs,
Vicki

Thanks Vicki I have paged him 2 times now and so far no response I guess I am meant to live in pain. I think I might try a hot bath and if that doesn't work then try the ER but I don't really know what to tell them other than I have IC and am in pain and nothing over the counter is working. This depresses me so much feeling as if Drs don't care. Thanks again

When I quit smoking, I put up a sign in my house, cleaned all the drapes, and ended up replacing the carpeting --- nobody would dare try to light up in my house! That was twenty years ago --- and it was one of the things that did help my bladder.
Quitting isn't easy, but definitely worth trying again and again until you succeed. It's a wonderful sense of accomplishment when you succeed.
Warm encouraging hugs,
Donna
