Good Afternon IC'ers... :)
I have had quite a few DMSO treatments and always am baffled by the SCENT it leaves. I, however, cannot smell it. Initially when I pee it out the 1st time I do, but then I do not anymore. However, my hubby, kids and friends and family all sware I STINK! They say its garlicy...or jsut something they cannot quite pinpoint....Im kinda pointed toward a different location when I have it done due to the scent :ignore: but I laugh I stay away! I just was wondering if anyone knows why that happens and what is it??!! Thanks everyone
I have DMSO treatments every 3 weeks for the past 13 years and I cannot smell it either. However sometimes (not always) I can taste it. Everyone in my family can smell it but I can't. My niece says it smells like baby corn but I've gotten everything from olives to tomatoes.

HGC,,, Thanks for responding Do you know why that happens? I mean why it causes a smell like that?
I assume that the DMSO smells and it is excreted through your pores . Why we can't smell it I have no idea.

DMSO is easily absorbed through body tissues because it is an organic solvent. So, when it is instilled into your bladder, some of it gets into your blood stream very quickly because it passes through the bladder wall into the blood vessels there (this is why they will not do a DMSO instill if you have a UTI... the DMSO can carry bacteria through the bladder wall too and into your blood, which is a bad situation). Once the DMSO is in your bloodstream, it passes through the liver and is metabolized into a slightly different molecule that is more easily excreted. In fact, the reason many people taste the DMSO is because one way the metabolites are excreted is through the lungs, so your breath is often what stinks the most. However, it can also come out of your skin, in your urine, and even in your stool for the first 24 hours. Therefore, the longer you hold it, the worse you're gonna stink ;)
I think the reason why you don't smell it is that you get used to it pretty quick -- it's like most people don't notice if they have bad breath or B.O. LOL :lmao:

HGC you was saying your niece says it smells like baby corn.
That's funny now but I had an treatment done & I can never smell it. But my Husband came home from work one day & said what in the heck is that smell. I said what, he said it smells like corn in here. Well of course I didn't smell anything. Then I had to leave to go to work & I was in the car & hubby came to the window & then he said there's that Corn smell again, it must be on you. And I said well i got an treatment done today. So that's what I think it was. LOL

I was told it would smell like garlic. My present uro said he likes the smell of garlic - and what he smells from DMSO ain't something he likes. I was so amazed that as soon as the instill started, I could taste whatever it was imediately. No one every told me that they, in fact, smelled it on me. But it is certainly one of the stated side effects.
