My insurance won't cover my elmiron till I have a pst I am very scared to have this test done. Please help how painful is this test?
I have never had this test, but have read there is some discomfort with it. Remember though that as soon as they put the potassium in and you react, they should rinse it out and if I remember right, I think sometimes they put a lidocaine or some type of numbing solution in it.
So yes there may be a little discomfort but it would be worth it for you to be able to try Elmiron to see if it works for you. It is very beneficial to some IC patients.

I had the PST and its really not that bad. It is uncomfortable but not bad. First they fill your bladder with water then they drain it and fill it with the potassium. As soon as you react they drain it and then instill some numbing meds. Its more scary than it really is. I wish you the best...

I called My dr. and told the nurse that I have been through enough and I am not going through anymore procedures unless I absolutely had to. My gyn is not in the office till friday so I will see what she says. I am mentally and physically exhausted from surgery and all this testing I am spent. My uro had to take me off from urised because it was causing me to have stomach cramps and diarhea. He said he did not think it was causing it but I didn't have these symptoms till 24 hrs after I started the med so I am going to lay off them for awhile. I finally found Azo standard in my drug store and I bought some I will see if it works for me.

I know what you mean about not wanting to have any more testing done! For awhile, I felt like all I did was go to the doctors! It is so exhausting!! But, I did have the pst test done. It gave me my final dx. It did burn really bad, but he gave me a rescue solution right after. I also had some pain meds to use. That day I was pretty uncomfortable, but after that day, I was back to to my normal IC symptoms. It was worth it to get my diagnosis!

I don't understand this. I mean they won't cover anything meaning any part of the elmiron? The med is fda approved. That is not fair. Can you file a grievance?

I am waiting to hear from My gyn tommorrow and go from there. The last time they wouldn't cover a med it ended me up in the hostipal and I got really sick. and then they finally covered my ulcer med. I hope it does not happen this time with elmiron.

Are you sure your insurance company is saying this and not the doctor's office? I have never heard of the insurance company denying a fda approved drug. I had a doctor tell me that I had to have the pst test to justify him giving me Elmiron but then I went to another uro and he wrote the prescription.
I would call my insurance company. I asked our Ortho rep about that and she said it doesn't sound right to her.

yes I am sure I called my insurance company and they told me the same thing. I am with an hmo they only cover generics . They say I have to have potassuim senstivity test before they will cover the elmiron.

This is what happens when you have managed care.

Whkat they are saying is that they want a definite diagnosis. I don't have prescription coverage, but at one time did and I had DMSO denied because I had been treated for a diagnosis other than IC and the insurance company put the other diagnosis on top. When they denied the DMSO. I contacted them and asked them to look a little deeper and they said, Oh, we didn't see the IC diagnosis --- and they did cover it.

Sorry about the problems with the insurance company. I was hoping it was just a misunderstanding.
