View Full Version : Had to put down my cat today

Been awfully sad today, almost 2 years ago I lost Cuddles (my one cats sister) and today my cat Smokey took a turn for the worst. We were told she had heart and lung failure so we had to put her down. Both cats had been with me since before I got IC and I'm finding it a little hard to cope with things now that both are gone, since I had her since I was 9 years old.
Any positive thoughts, or words would be gladly appreciated.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your cat. I remember when I was 12 and my cat died in my mothers arms. The whole thing still makes me sad almost 20 yrs later. They are such loving creatures who just want love in return. I love it when you rub them in just the right spot and they reach out to you whether it be by purring or putting out their paw and they touch you sometimes in a way that a hug from a person who loves you just can't.

My husband is a police K9 handler (hence- my user name! LOL) and we have had to go through what you have done twice with the canines, plus several other times with family pets. It is absolutely awful, isn't it? The grief that you feel is REAL, so allow yourself to cry, be sad, miss them, and everything you would do if it were a real person that you have lost. We sure understand how bonded you get when you count on an animal to get you through the tough times....I counted on the K9s to keep my hubby safe more than once, and he was with the dogs 24/7. I have seen grown, strong police officers get teary-eyed when they speak of a past K9s even years later. Don't feel any shame in grieving.....loved ones are loved ones....two-legged or 4!!!!!

Amy ....
So sorry for your loss. Yes, it is hard when you loose a pet. They become a part of your life. As I type this I'm looking at "fluff" my huge 30lb ball of grey fur sprawled out on her pillow on the bed enjoying the sunshine. It makes me laugh so hard at times at the positions cats get into when sleeping. I myself have 3 cats, 1 dog (in the house) and then 12 horses, a barn full of cats and kittens and just discovered one very large raccoon in the loft of the barn. I have lots to entertain me that is for sure.
Everyday the pain will be less and less. Remember all the fun times you had with her !!

Thanks all for the words... I am still having a hard time looking at things around the house, and even found myself waking up at the times during the night when she used to wake me. I know it'll be tough until we get her ashes back. My parents have been talking about once we are finished mourning about getting another cat or two. I just really miss my cat badly and I know the tears will soon ease up and I'll be not as sad as time goes by.
Thanks all again.
Amy
P.S. by the weekend I'm going to post a picture of her on the same sight as her sister (candle light thing) I'll post the link as soon as I get it done.

I'm sorry
I had to put my cat down two weeks ago, its really tough. It was actully one of my family pets that was living with my mom. We had a dog, three cats, two guinea pigs and a rabbit. Theres only Jazzy the cat left, all of them died of natural causes expect poor lex. She was over wieght, her liver was failing and she was diabetic. She was pretty much starving to death so she went peacefully.

I've lost three cats in the last several years... and each time I grieved and sobbed. You were blessed to have them in your life and you, in turn, will bless the next cat that chooses you to share their life with. Here's an idea that I did after my vet unexpectedly made a donation in honor of my first cat when he died. Now, it's a tradition. Whenever a friend or family member loses an animal, I make a donation to the UC Davis Vet School Companion Animal program in their name. It's a great way to honor her memory and help others too! Why not!

Its never easy loosing your four legged friend. I totally understand when you say you wake up at the times she would wake you up. I often thought I would hear the bells on the collar from ours. In time you will feel a little better, just know that she loved you and knows you loved and cared for her.
I love the candle light picture. What beautiful cats.
I am so sorry for you.loosing an animal is soo hard. I cry for weeks..We are just sensitive and loving people that own animals.. I have cats too.I breed Ragdolls. It is so much fun watching the kittens and adults play. They give me such joy.Ragdolls are big floppy cats that follow you around everywhere and total lap cats.. I got a new girl last August, she got sick last Thurdays and took her to the Vet..she was jaundiced and Friday night I found out she was in liver failure and I had to put her down. She was such a pretty cat only 14 months... I had never had to euthanize a cat before..It was horrible to leave the Vets office. I have little songs I sing to some of my cats and she had a song..so I didn't leave until I got to sing her her song and love on her..and she gave me some kisses.. I got home and my kitten has been looking for her all over... she keeps looking up the stairs for her..that makes it hard. But I know she is not in pain anymore and the time I had her was a blessing...

Oh, I am so sorry. It is devastating to lose a beloved pet. They are a part of our family and our hearts, you know? I joke that my dog is my alter ego.
I like Jill's idea of doing a donation in memory of a deceased pet. It's a nice way to honor their lives and the love they've shared with you. I try to donate each year to the Humane Society where I adopted my dog, since I see all of those other pets without a home as part of her "extended family" now.

thanks all for the kind words. Last week we got her urn and ashes back which has made things easier here for us. To tell the two urns apart we bought tiny fake flowers Pink for smokey and White for Cuddles. We are also planting some mini roses pink again for smokey and yellow for cuddles, where their catnip patch used to be in memory of them.
The odd time I still cry but I know she is in a way better place now and I know eventually we'll be able to get some other kittens once we are finished grieving.
Thanks Again all for the support, especially at a time where my health hasn't been the greatest.

Hi Amy, glad to hear she's home now where she belongs, with you. I know it was easier on me (kind of) when I got my Cali girl's ashes back, felt "right", like she was finally home. Believe me, I know it's not easy, I just lost my little Cali Bug this past March, and it devastated me. Still think about her and cry every now and then, but I know she's still with me, and I give extra loving & cuddles to her sister Missy. Some day I will get some kittens, but timing still isn't right, I want to spend all the time I can with Michelle (aka Missy) and give her my undivided attention, as they are the same age (really and truly sisiters, same mom) and I want to make the most of the time I have her in my world!
I understand too, those guys were/are my world kept me company many a night when my sweetie still lived out of town, and got me through some rough IC nights! My little furry support system. :)
Hugs to you,
Tracey :)

(((Hugs))) I also put my dog on that website a while back, same thing with the star, gotta click it to see his pic. http://www.in-memory-of-pets.com/personalcandles.asp?ID=46999 Theres a website that has a chatroom that deals w/the loss of pets, if you want it let me know, I will find it for you, they helped me get through Ro's passing and they are very nice ppl.

Hi Amy,
I'm really sorry to hear about Smokey...I have two dogs & they're our babies....I completely understand how attached to pets we become and how the house can sound so empty without them.

I have had to put down 3 cats thus far in my life, I terribly miss all of them:( I have 3 now and it's more than enough (including the husband of course! LOL!!) My cats are my babies...funny thing is that when I come home from work, they get up & greet me, they don't for my husband :)
Feel free to e-mail me directly if you need support:) I was raised w/cats & so was my husband!

Thanks again all for responding.
Last night I felt like I was going to break down and cry again just because I miss how she used to wake me up at night. Funny thing is it bugged me before and now I seem to get up at those same times to use the washroom lol. Other then that I just miss having my furry little babies to pick up and hold on to when I'm feeling down. I guess the hardest thing I'm having to deal with is that I'm going out of remission slightly and my IC's been acting up and I have no one to purr and make me think everything will be alright.
My cats used to sound like they were talking, they'd ask for milk, nummys and my one cat always would cry what sounded like Mommy if I left the house for too long. I miss hearing that. I know eventually I will add some furry people to the household again but now I guess I just have to focus more on myself since my mom figures I wasn't always paying attention to my health when I was worried about my cats.
It's just a little hard to adjust to right now, can't believe on tuesday she will have been gone 3 weeks already :(

My sympathy to each of you who have gone through the loss of a pet....it's such a hard thing to deal with.... I had to put my favorite dog down in February and I'm still not over it. Yesterday, my bird died in my hands and I'm not sure when I'm going to stop crying. Every time I look at her stuff I break down again. :grouphug:

HI
I am so sorry for your loss, I am in tears looking at their pretty pictures. You made their life a blessing. My mom has a friend who says how kind it is that we take God's creatures into our home and make them part of our family. Your cats are probably playing in the clouds chasing mice, or just bouncing in the clouds, or taking a nap on a nice billowey cloud. I am sure they are not alone. As time pases, you may get another one, and he or she will fill another space in your warm heart.
I have two calicos and hopefully they will live long lives. We always had cats growing up, one lived to be 23 another 15. I am hoping my Callie Calypso Zotz and Mallena Jolie Rose live long lives (calicos, spoiled to the hilt rescue kitties).

Things have become so much easier and I find anytime I'm down some of her fur still shows up so I take it as if she's sending me a little cheering upper :). It's almost been 2 months already that she's been gone and even though the odd time I still catch myself lookin for her I still think she's in a way better place with all her brothers and sisters. Plus since she has been gone we have been getting wild rabbits showin up in our yard which they have been making me grin alot. We have planned though sometime before christmas to get two more tabby kittens :) That's amazing that they lived so long every cat that I have own has only lived till 14 at the oldest. I hoping our new kittens will fit in just as good as our past two. Thanks again for posting and checkin out my beautiful little angels.
