ok, so i went to my doc about two weeks ago for a horrible flare and kidney infection. they gave me a shot of strong antibiotics and a perscription for antibiotics and a five day supply of pain killers. well the antibiotics worked wonders and helped reduce the pain so that i only had to take the painkillers at bed time and have managed to keep them around for a while, but now i have one left and i am in a horrible flare(took 3 today and debating on taking another, the last one). the doc refuses on a normal basis to give me pain meds and tells me "the flare ups are normal and the only way to deal with them is with over the counter meds." he is a wonderful doc, until i ask for pain meds. so i went to my pcp with my husband this week and set up an appointment with him for this coming thursday, but i dont know what to do right now. i have tried soaking in a hot bath, using my heating pad, using ice, and even the otc meds, but the only thing that lasts more than a few minutes after i take it is my vicodin. my hubby has to be at work in five hours so i cant go to the er and leave him with the kids to deal with. he has promised to take me to the er when he gets off if it is not better but what do i do until then? i have to kids that are 5yrs and 20 months so i cant just stay in bed all day and everyone else is going to be at work, friends, family....any ideas? i would love some suggestions(sp?). thanks in advance, kari
ps. cant seem to sleep because i keep having to go potty, took me about half an hour to write this with all my potty breaks, lol no its been 45 mins. geez......

I am so sorry that you are in so much pain. Maybe start to keep a pain log every day so your doctor knows exactly how bad the pain is. I work in the medical field and they usually use a 0-10 system. 0 being no pain, 10 being I'm in the worst pain imaginable/ I'm going to die. Keep track of how long the pain lasts and if anything helps the pain at all. Sometimes doctors don't exactly know how much it really hurts unless you can spell it out for them. My doctor didn't give me pain meds for my flairs, he gave me a muscle relaxer. It works great sometimes, and other times almost not at all. I hope you get feeling better soon.

If you're having bladder spasms, a smooth muscle antispasmodic might help you --- and doctors are usually willing to prescribe those with no problem. I hope you feel better very soon.

i just got back from the er.....the first doc i had was mean.....he did a pelvic and told me that if i was diagnosed with ic in october then that was not my problem now :cussing: :cussing: :cussing: he had his student perform the pelvic exam and his hands were so big that he couldnt even feel my cervix.....then shift changed and a new doc came in that had seen me before... he nailed the original doc and gave me morphine in my iv and a perscription for vicodon and sent me on my way after apologizing for his colegues idiocy.....i am not going to be nice on the survey that i recieve in the mail this week....i thank you for your helpful advice and i am on my way to my bed and my heating pad, maybe ill get some sleep tonight. thanks again, kari :grouphug:
I am soo glad the new doctor came in and came through for you.
I am very disillusioned with the medical profession in general, but am really grateful for the good ones!!
Hoping you feel much better soon!

So glad the second doctor you saw was understanding and nice :)
If this type of debilitating pain is happening on a regular basis, have you tried getting a referral to a pain management doctor? They often help a lot. Luckily, my uro is part of a pelvic pain clinic, and is also an IC expert -- these days I have no problem with adequate pain control.
If you can't get a pain management referral, would your PCP be willing to manage your pain for you?
I like the idea of keeping a pain log. Also, if possible, bring your hubby to the doctor with you -- sometimes, hearing how debilitating your pain is from someone else will help the doctor understand how badly you are feeling.

my pcp is going to see me thursday and set up an appointment to see a uro. the doc that diagnosed me is my gyno and he doesnt like to give pain meds....so i turned to my pcp who got a little mad that i had not come to him when i started feeling the pain much less when the other doc started me on meds for ic but wouldnt do any tests to see how bad it was or if that is really what i have....the meds have helped but i still get flares and the doc that diagnosed me just says to take otc pain relievers, but they dont help. so my pcp is going to do the test were they put fluid in your bladder and take pictures and then refer me to one of two uros in my area that specialize in ic. if i cant get my pcp or the uro to help control the pain i will be asking for a referal to a pain mangment doc. i will let everyone know as soon as i know....going to take pain meds and go to bed again....thanks again, hugs to all, kari :grouphug:
