Has anyone had this treatment? I had one in the office last week. The irritation from the catheter was debilitating. Since the office is about a 2 1/2 hour drive, I was glad a friend had offered a room for me to spend the night. I'm still not sure why he gave it to me. I have a script for use at home. I was willing to try the cath at home for myself. But I don't know what else the instillation does if it's only pain management, I don't particularly need that. Any thoughts?

Hey Maggie,
I'm having a cysto w/hydro next Wednesday. I've had instills with an Elmiron cocktail and DMSO cocktails. I had 6 treatments of each. My uro said if the hydro doesnt help me that he wants to try the heparin/lidocaine cocktail. I always have pain, discomfort and hard to pee after the instills. I hate them but I do it because then the docs cant say I didnt try but I truly think that the catheter has a lot to do with it. The DMSO also gave me a burning in my bladder and after I peed, of course. My ride home is 2 hours. I never have done an instill at home. I know a lot of ladies here do do it and it gives them relief. I bring a pillow to sit on and recline in the front seat to relieve the pressure on my pelvic area and my bladder. I have most of my pain in the center of my bladder and my right side.
Feel Better!

I am on my 9th bladder treatment

It is heparin/lidocaine/sodiumbicarb/and a pain killer.

I get pain after I pee when it is over and I get sore a while but that is it. I think the treatment of helping outweighs the increased pain for a while when I first get it done.

I have 5 more to go then I am still going once a week after that just with lidocaine-bicarb and pain killer

Heparin lidocaine is what I do for installation. No not only for pain...Heparin helps re coat your bladder...lidocaine pretty much numbs the nerves a bit. Since in many cases the nerves can cause almost all of your symptoms both should be helpful for all symptoms. I found after taking Elmiron (which recoats the bladder) I am not quite as bothered by a catheder as I used to be. I certainly hope you feel better soon and find a treatment that works for you. Good luck!

Hi, My urologist has referred me to a pain management doctor. I have an appt on June 2. They told me not to eat or drink anything and that I need a driver. What is that about? She said in case I have anethesia. Can someone tell me what could happen at that appt. Has anyone been to there pain management doc and what kind of treatments do pain management provide? Thank you
Blessings, Betty-Jo

I never heard of that as I go to pain mgmt all the time.

Only thing I can think of is maybe they want to get you an injection because my husband gets them in his back.

You need to call your pain mgmt doctor and ask what they plan on doing

Hi Katrina,
I dont what it is but I've had no luck with the instills. They make me worse during the treatments and afterward I go back to the same way I was before the treatments. I have however made progress with the Elmiron since taking it since 2/00 and it has helped alot. I'm a little scared because tomorrow I stop taking Elmiron because I'm going for a cysto w/hydro on Wednesday the 25th. So I know that my bladder is going to be very mad at me...... :cussing: A couple of months ago I waited too long to refill my Elmiron and I was without it for a couple of days and I really felt the difference which, I thought was sort of a good thing since that reassured me that the Elmiron was working.

Thank You for listening and God Bless,

Portia, When you go to pain Mgmt. what do they do to you, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks

They do nothing TO me. I sit with with my doctor and we discuss my pain and how sometimes better than others and some worse. Then she looks at all my meds and either adjusts them or changes them. She still has me on the percocet-neurontin combo as she does not want to start oxycontin yet, I have oxycodone. She gave me a tens unit for my bladder which helps.

She never mentioned injections or things like that.

I mean my husband has to have injections in his back as he has 3 bad discs but she does not knock him out either. She just numbs him with topical oil and gives him three needles and the he is okay

SO WHAT I AM THINKING IS SHE SAID TO YOU MAYBE ANESTHESIA THEN IT WOULD BE AN INJECTION TO HELP WITH THE PAIN

I WOULD CALL AND SEE WHAT THERE PLANS ARE BUT DON'T WORRY THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND IT MIGHT HELP, BUT CALL ANYWAY

My guess is he might do a nerve block. Pain Specialist think they work so well for people in pain. It is an injection like someone on here said. You have anesthesia. I had 6 treatments. They did nothing for me. That does not mean it will not work for you.
I would think you would have to fast for anesthesia though.

Thank you ladies for responding back to me. When I was on the phone with them I asked what am i in for, why do I need to fast and she said just in case you have a procedure done. So I guess I will find out on June 2. That seems so far away when I am in so much pain. I see a woman here in FL next Friday. She supposedly specializes in IC. My only problem with her is that she is a Nurse Practitioner. So I don't think she will be able to do anything that would require procedures, surgery etc. But I guess I will see what she has to say. My next step is to go to NY to a doctor that my uro in Orlando recommended. But we shall see..... God Bless you, Betty-Jo
