Most of my pain is on the left portion of the bladder - like a knot that feels like acid is pouring on it. Sometimes it's mostly in the urethra - it seems to switch back and forth. When my bladder is full (that's a relative term), then the pain spreads out to the rest of the bladder. No doc has ever commented on the pain being mostly on one side. Where is yours? (I think my bladder has shrunk over 35 years) :headbang:

My pain started with pain in my right side that I thought was an ovarian cyst. It still bothers me from time to time. The bladder usually hurts when it's full, morning when I get up. *sigh* Hope this helps, Kathi

Hi, I have pain on my right side. I dont know why, I always want to ask my uro but by the time I get in there, there are sooo many other things that I want to talk about and things that he wants to say and I completely forget. Maybe after my cysto w/hydro next Wednesday it will show why...... I thought I was the only one like this because I've never heard anyone else talk or mention it.

I have a lot of pain on my left side...especially when constipated or gassy. If that could be what is happening let your doctor know...but it could be. As far as the urethra...I think that urethra pain is a symptom many of us have at one time or another.
Some people have had pain on one side or the other because of that being where one of their hunner ulcers were.
I have wondered if sleeping in one possition a long time could be connected to why pain is sometimes worse in one place.
Definatly talk to a doctor about this. I told my Uro about the pain being worse on the left side...he said well your bladder is in the middle you probably should tell your gynocologist. Well I wish I had listed to him right away since it turned out I had endo.
It isn't competely uncommon for us to mention pain more localized at times....but I encourage you to be sure nothing else is going on...even though it may be IC any new symptom you should speak to your doctor or doctors about.

Hi Katrina,
Before I was diagnosed with IC I had gone to my gyno. He sent me for a ultrasound and found I have a fibroid on my uterus, which was 3 inches in February of 03 grew to 6 inches in October of 03 and that is on the left side. I have no idea how big it is at this point. He was the one who first mentioned to me about IC. I had no idea what IC was. I had been going to my uro for some time for an irritable bladder so I on my next visit to my uro I had mentioned IC. He put me through about 4 tests before diagnosing me with IC. I had a cysto in office without the stretching of my bladder but he did instill water. I also had gone to a previous gyno years before this had happened and I had a laparoscopy for endo but it came up negative. So like alot of us who have IC have had it a long time before becoming diagnosed. But I do go to whoever I need to if I dont feel "good" about how I feel and I dont get any satisfaction with any doc......I'm not sure if I've explained that right... :hmm: So, I'm going for a cysto w/hydro and I'm going to request that he do a biopsy even if he doesnt think its necessary. But thanks again for your input, I do appreciate it.

PS I also get a lot of gas when my bladder flares and/or in pain. My uro said thats normal..... :hmm:

I told my uro my "IC" pain was weird because it was off to both sides (around my ovaries, seemingly) and I wondered if it was either ovaries or bowel pain. He said that bowel pain would be just on the left side. So maybe that could be what's contributing to your pain. So many organs down there packed in to such a little space, it's hard to sort it all out...

Hi Diane,
Yeah, its so weird how you learn how many organs and muscles are affected by IC. I have my main pain on my right side thats why they were confused to find the fibroid on my uterus and it was on my left side. So my gyno said he didnt know what the problem was except for maybe the IC. Now because of all the meds I think I have IBS. I've never had the urgency to move my bowels like I do now. Its only in the morning and it gets bad but thats about it. If it ever gets out of hand I'll let my Primary Doc know. For now he did diagnos(sp?) me with colitis.
Thanks!!

It can start off bad and improve during the day or be the reverse. Usually getting worse.... and the left pain is in the bladder not outside it for sure.

I have left-sided pain too. feels like my ovaries are achin'! had them checked out, no problems there, but I have a fibroid on the left side. i also get wicked constipated adn the pain/pressure tends to abate after I have a BM. i am hoping to see a uro-gyno soon to sort all this out since i do have many symptoms of IC on top of it all - started 6 months ago after I got an IUD.

Usually once I get out of bed (usually thats a job within it self) take a percocet for the pain (and all the other meds), severe pelvic pain, I get on the computer for about 1 to 2 hours and then I'll feel good but as the day goes on things get worse. I just started going back to my original uro (when I moved for distance reasons I changed from my original uro) and on wednesday I went in for an o.v. and I told him I have to take percocet everyday. He asked me why and how the pain starts and I told him that doing my everyday work, bending over just every day exertion(sp?) brought on bladder and pelvic pain. This goes on everyday except for flare up days  His reply was that he never heard of that. His expression on his face looked as if he didnt believe me. He asked me if anyone on this website had the same problems. (BTW, the uro I left agreed with me about my symptoms, he referred me to a pain doc but thats another story) So at this point I'm not sure going back to him was the right decision. He also said he'd treat me with the percocet but if I wanted to go to something stronger,i.e. duragesic patch, etc., I'd have to go to a pain managment doctor. So, he gave me 60 perc's for 4 months. I have to take 2 to 3 a day just to be productive. So, I now I have to go to a new gyno, thinking about going to a new uro and a new pain doctor. I had a pain doc but she left the practice and nobody else in the practice wants to treat me. So, now I feel so tired and feel like giving up....I'm really unhappy and upset right now. I wish it wasnt so complicated to get treated.....So, I'm sorry I'm complaining and its soo long.
Thanks for listening :)

My pain has always been mostly on my right side--kind of a trigger point. I can put my finger right on it, only it makes it worse when I touch it. The uro told me that every IC patient has pain on one side or the other; that's how he knows on which side to place the interstim. years ago when I had pelvic floor therapy, the PT said I had a muscle spasm that was causing the problem--it's the (sp?) obturator internus. I had trigger point injections at the site, but no relief.
For years I thought my bladder was on my right side--didn't realize it was in the middle.

Left-sided pain here. My Uro explained that most of my bladder inflammation is on the left.

As I reading these posts, thinking I dont really have pain when I actaully urinate, but realizing I do have pain in the pelvic region as I just poked around on my lower abdomin and was tender and sore, and i am not pmsing, So maybe I ought to bring that up to the uro as I always tell I have no burning as I urinate so therefore I dont have pain, but now realizing I am tender to the touch in that region, as far as any intense pain shooting pains sometimes i think are probalbly cysts bursting or something going on, but it switches on me not always on the same side, so I dont know???

Since I started having botox injections and getting the IC and pfd pretty much under control. The injections however, did not seem to help with left sided deep pain. I went to pt and biofeedback. My PT, Gyn, Biofeedback Clinician all thought I had PNE. When I mentioned it to the uro he suggessted I go see a neurologist in Houston that specializes in Pudendal Neuropathy. I went a few months ago and had an emg and block. I do have pne. Full entrapment of the pudendal nerve. The only solution is for me to try to have the surgery to relieve the pressure.
