hi all,
can someone explain what happens during a cystoscopy? I have to have one in the doctors office(I have already had the hydro in the hospital) Do they put water in your bladder to see what u can hold and what else to they look for? Also what can i expect afterwards ? Thank u because I already have such bad bladder pain and retention and i am so scared that this is going to make it worse:(:(:(

Rhoda,
Just out of curiosity - how come they are doing another one if they already did one in the hospital?

I am a bit puzzled --- if you have had a cystoscopy with hydrodistention, why is it necessary to do another cystoscopy?

You'll find a pretty clear explanation in the Patient Handbook at http://www.ic-network.com/handbook

They put water in but not enough to stretch it like they do for a hydrodistension.
Usually I burn some afterwards, but the cysto itself isn't that bad. Good luck, hope they help you.

Marye is right they put some water in but not enough to distened your bladder. When I had mine I was uncomfortable and it hurt to go afterwards for awhile, but for me the cysto/hydro under anthesia is harder on me. This test is not used to diagnose IC or for any theruptic purpose's but to rule out other bladder problems. If I am wrong I sure these wonderful people will know, but I do think this is what it is for. I really dont feel that this procedure will help alveate any of your problems but that is my opion. I wish you luck on your procedure...

I just had an in-office cystoscopy yesterday. It was uncomfortable but brief (like 3 minutes). The nurse put an anti-germ liquid and a numbing agent on my urethra, then inserted the catheter, it felt a little uncomfortable but not painful. Then the doctor inserted the little scope through the catheter and that did feel slightly painful for a few seconds. Then he looked around with the scope and told me what he was seeing (no stones, no obstructions, no tumors, but an inflammation in the trigone area of the bladder), it felt a little weird while he was doing that, maybe a little poking and stretching sensation. Then he filled my bladder with water, let it out, then filled it again (to see if filling it up was painful for me, which it wasn't), then let it out, then took out the catheter. I was given a wipe to clean up with, and before I left I was given a prophylactic antibiotic to take. In all, I would say that I experienced maybe 30 seconds of discomfort/slight pain and maybe 30 seconds of stinging and maybe a minute of slight pressure. I felt almost normal last night and today, although there's a definite uncomfortable slightly cramping sensation after peeing which is now wearing off.

I have a mildish case of IC so I don't think my urethra and bladder are as sensitive as many. To me it was a fairly easy procedure, and I'm glad to have it done as it ruled out some things that might have been causing me symptoms.

Good luck! The good part is that it's over very quickly. I hope it goes really easily for you.

Thanks Diane for that insight on your procedure. I have read that some do well and others do not with that procedure. However, if you feel that you cannot handle it in the office, I recommend back to the hospital. It seems rediculous for me if they have already done this before. I am not too happy that another doctor that I am going to wants to do the same tests again. One time is enough for me.
