I have noticed that bowel movements increase my bladder pain, but I'm not really sure why. Is it muscular? Is it directly affecting the bladder in some way?
Thanks in advance,
jen

Hi, Jen, not sure what the answer is, but wanted to let you know you aren't alone in reporting this effect.

Myself, I actually feel increased bladder pain before a BM but feel better afterwards, so I'm sort of the opposite, but I always thought it was odd, too, that there should be some effect with that. I didn't know how the two were connected.

If I had to guess (I sure don't know) I'd maybe guess that it had something to do with the nerves in the region. My doctor told me the nerves in the pelvis are like a big ball of spaghetti, all tangled up together and affecting one another. So that's what made me start thinking that maybe what was going on with one nerve, might have an effect on another nerve.

Anyway, you aren't alone, some of us notice things like this and wonder about it. I just don't know what the answer to it is though. Maybe someday the doctors will be able to tell us.

Blessings, Lori

Hey Jen,
I found out that I am straining a lot more to urinate if I haven't had a bowel movement prior. Once I empty my bowels, it is A LOT easier for the urine to come out. I don't know if I am just odd or what.. I do get pain those in my lower back/butt area before it's time for a bowel movement though.. Is that what you are talking about?

I have had the same feeling and don't understand why either. my thoughts are that the stain of the b.m is putting pressure on the bladder. and lord knows our bladders don't like pressure in no way on it.
maybe this is something you can talk to your doctor about and he can give you some answers. this is even something i may talk to my doctor about when i go see him again on june 11 for a recheck after my surgery. i have already so many question to ask him i just hope i can get them all in. he is a very good listener but i don't want to take all his time up, i don't even mind the wait at this office because i know he is going to listen to me and my connern just as he did his other pat. a doctor that will listen is a doctor who cares and is willing to help when help is needed.

now those other offices i have to wait forever to see a doctor like my gyn. i don't like it because i know i'm being rushed threw and he just over booked himself. what a shame. some really want to help when others are just after the money :(
if you find out the answer before i do please let us know.
maybe one of our RN's that are pat. here can sheed some light on the subject. No they can't give us medical advice but they could tell us at least what we may be able to ask the doctor where the doctor understand more what we are taking about.
Thank God for memebers who cares. and lord knows we have tons and tons of them here.

I think it a lot because of the straining and musscles.... bascially our pelvic musscles work together a lot and the condition of our pelvic musscles effects our bladder. The best thing is to try to not strain. If you can have a BM by just relaxing things go a lot better. I find a lot of us ICers don't deal with much regularity but when you do it helps a lot. I have been in pain not only during bm but afterwards for a quite a while many times....and I found that physical therapy and helping to stregnthen and relax those musscles did help some...but it is hard to not effect a very tender bladder a little bit. Anyway, you are definatly not alone! :grouphug:

I was once asked after seeing one of my first uro doctors,if I had problems with my bm,and he also wanted to know if I had loose bowels,he told me that, your fecus matter can come in contact with your bladder and cause severe pain, especially a infection. So I guess all that can be tough on the bladder.

My dr. has told me that IC, IBS, VV, and endo. are all related. So, when something is happening in one, it may also affect the other.

I also have more pain and frequency everytime I have a bowel movement. It really sends me with worsened symptoms for the rest of the day. It doesn't matter if I'm constipated or not. It seems like a lot of people have relief after a BM with this IC but I'm not one of those. I think that it could be a combination of the pressure it puts on the bladder on the way out and muscle spasms caused by the pushing it out. Ann

With the pain happening with each bowl movement...I would not be surprissed if the more you have...the worse you feel. Since I can pretty much have Constipation and diarhia at the same time...It is often and extreme misserable maker. The Pelvic floor is very complex and very interactive...I know that was is constipation for me isn't really what it is like for many other people...but doesn't matter weather you are or not...we all usually need to push a little bit....and that can be just like someone pushing on abdomen where our bladder...except from the inside. That pluss the smasms, reaction from stools, the pelvic floor stress...BIG OUTCH
