I'm curious to know if there is anyone out there who has children now who have taken elmiron during their pregnancy. I just read previous thread about the elmiron and pregnancy and it seems like there are responses from people taking it during but I guess I would really like to hear from someone who had taken it, gave birth and child is doing ok. It would really be encouraging. I am 5 months pregnant now and I was taken off by urologist before conception and by the end of my first trimester do to the ic getting really bad my ob/gyn put me back on saying it is safe. I trust him and everything but I got a little nervous when I read about the limb bud deformity part on the previous thread. I really would like to hear from someone who has already taken it during and everything is fine. My gyno said that he has treated many with elmiron during but just looking for that extra encouragement. Ann

I'm glad you posted that question. I too would be interested to hear from people who took Elmiron during their pregnancy and also at what stage during their pregnancy they took it (1st trimester, 2nd, and/or 3rd).
I read a post in the thread titled "Pregnancy and Elmiron" from "kdfurgi" where she said her doctor said he'd treated pregnant patients on Elmiron and I believe the quote was "babies and moms are fine".
Hopefully we can hear from others who've had first hand experience.

I just gave birth 1 week ago and took elmiron throughout my entire pregnancy. My baby girl is beautiful and healthy.
I also took ditropan until my 6th month. my ob approved and encouraged both. I stopped the ditropan because the side effects increased dramatically at that point in my prg. for whatever reason.
I'm also breast feeding now while taking the elmiron. I have not started the ditropan again yet because it can change the amount of milk I produce. Going to wean in a couple of weeks so I can start my therapy again the way I was before pregancy (symptom free).
My ob said that class B is safe and if it is safe during pregnancy than he's okay with me taking it while I'm breastfeeding.

Does any one who has taken elmiron during pregnancy have older children? I worry about more subtle problems than limb malformations. I worry that something will pop up years down the line and the doctors will suddenly realize, "well, that happened because you took elmiron while you were pregnant/nursing her." Maybe elmiron hasn't been around long enough to know these things yet.
Does anybody know?

Actually elmiron has been around quite a while for "compassionate" use --- even before it was approved by the FDA for general sale.

I asked my mother who is an RN about what she thought about Elmiron during pregnancy. If anyone cares, she told me that she does not want me to take it for 3 months before conception, through the pregnancy, then all through breastfeeding. The reason is, as has been brought up in this thread, that people just don't know what a 10 or 20 year old who was exposed to early Elmiron wll be like developmentally. Not to say anything could even be wrong, so I don't want anyone who has taken it to needlessly worry, but she feels that there needs to be a longitudinal study done on children until early adulthood before people can say that a drug is safe during pregnancy.
Donna...what does "compassionate use" mean in regards to how it was used?

I was actually nearly symptom free while nursing. I only had frequent urination (at night particularly) and the pain levels were rather low.
I was not diagnosed until after I had weaned my dd.
IC is an autoimmune disease is it not?
It is a tough choice.
On the one hand you have the concerns regarding nursing and pregnancy while on meds.
The other hand you have the concerns about living with symptoms (which no one is going to deny, are bad) while pregnant and nursing.
Then you have the double wammy.
IC is thought to be genetic by some Drs and is an autoimmune disease. Since breastfeeding is so beneficial to a babies immune system would it be better to nurse while taking meds (with med concerns) or not nurse (with concerns about child not getting immune system boost with a chance of inheriting a genetic autoimmune disease) or nurse and not take meds (and live with symptoms)
There is no easy answer. :(
