View Full Version : What does your bladder hold??

Hi everyone. Yes, I'm back again today with another question. I was diagnosed with IC in April 2000. I read everything I could get my hands on about this horrible disease. I found myself lucky when I happened upon this website. Now, for my questions.....

-> Does anyone know what a normal bladder would hold in cc's?
-> And what an ic bladder would normaly hold in cc's? {NOT under sedation!**
-> Or what your bladder holds in cc's under sadation.

I would like everyones input on this if you know what your bladder holds.

I am going to see a specialist that is 2 hr away from where I live. (June 28th). I have been very happy with my uro until lately. However, I do love his "fill in" uro who happens to know a lot about the DMSO treatment. Dr. S. Shirley has been my life savor this past month! He believes in trying to control the pain and does this without talking "down" to me. I never leave him feeling like I had to beg for pain relief. Sadly, :( he is only staying with my uro until the end of June then he will be back doing research at UAB. (From my understanding!)

Anyway, please let me know what your baldder holds in cc's!!!
Thanks,
Trace-Laine

normally a bladder can hold about 600 cc/ml which is about 2.5 cups or 20 oz when i had my hydro/cysto i was holding about 200cc

Let's see -- I held about 600 cc (about 20 oz) under sedation when I had my hydro. Normal bladders will hold from 800 to 1200 cc (27 to ?? oz -- sorry, I'm looking at my urine measuring hat and it only goes up to 800 cc, and I can't remember the conversion factor for cc's to ounces offhand) under anesthesia.

However, if I am awake, the most I have ever peed is about 200cc (7 oz) and that was on a really good day. When I'm flaring, it ranges from 20-90 cc (3.5 oz or less) per void. Little tiny pees!!!

7 oz and that is extremely painful...

I have been doing bladder retraining. At the start of all this I was going in a range of about 25-100cc. Now I go in a range of 200 to (I am so proud) 550cc! The "record" of 550 cc is about 10 oz. i have never had a hydro so I dont know what its actual capacity is. My normal voids are about 300cc recently.

If people are not in pain, I would definetely recommend bladder retraining. Yes, is is uncomfortable, but so is peeing every 15 min....

I'm another one who has been doing bladder retraining. I have actually held 1000cc one time last week but that is probably not advisable to hold it that long so I am trying to drink a little less and now I find that I normally hold from 350 to 600. Apparently that is a pretty large capacity for an IC bladder. My main IC symptom is pain and urgency though and as long as I'm not in a terrible flare then my frequency is pretty normal - about 7 times a day or less. If I'm in a bad flare it is every 1/2 hour or so. YUCK.

I was told a normal bladder is about 800 to 1000ccs.. (I want one lol)
my first hydro unde sedation held less then 250 cc's.

my second was stretched to 600 cc's

when I have done bladder diaries in the past my most volume is 3 ounces ... not to sure of the cc's... don't have the chart infront of me

-> And what an ic bladder would normaly hold in cc's? This will differ, but I read once that a true IC bladder holds less then 600 cc's

My doctor told me a normal bladder without i.c can hold 1000cc mine holds 750 cc but i don't know if he ment when it was streach or when i'm awake.

My bladder under sedation last summer could hold 400-450CC I am told. My bladder is badly compromised by scar tissue right now and so that's why I have the reduced capacity.

Before I got my Bion implanted (a new experimental neuromodulation device, kind of like the Interstim only different) I was voiding on average about 100cc or less (usually less, usually only about 50cc) per void. When I measured it at home, I measured using a cup and with my own urine (more irritating than the water they put into your bladder at the doc's office) I could only hold about 1/4 of a cup usually or less.

Now I've actually held 7 1/2 ounces during a couple of voids, although my "average" voids are still only about 4 1/2 ounces. That's good for me, though, since my old average voids were about 1 1/2 ounces.

Blessings, Lori

Under anesthesia, my capacity was about 260cc. It's so low because I have a great deal of scar tissue maybe from kidney surgery but more likely from urethral dilatations. During the day though 2 oz is about average capacity. Too much more is too painful.

I have held 1600 cc's of urine because although i have IC I can't pee on my own so if I don't cath myself it just stays.. natural hydrodistention... get s me in trouble withthe uro though!

Mine held 650 cc's under sedation and normally it hold between 1 1/2 cup and 2 cups, not sure on the cc's of that?? I know that because of the lovely thing we have to do where we catch our pee in a measuring cup!! My husband, I am so jealous, only goes pee TWO times a day and I had him pee in my measuring thing and he overflowed it!!! I am so jealoud of people like that!! I actually have a " bathroom route" mapped out on the way to work. IE, like okay, this exit the best b-room is here, this one the CLOSEST is here, etc, etc!!!
Sorry this is so sloppy, I am work ;) gotta go!!

Wow! I'm not alone! I haven't gotten above 100cc's. I've tried holding and retraining, but no matter how long I hold it, it is still 100cc. Then it fills again really fast so I have to go again in 10 - 20 minutes.
I had an instillation yesterday of a heparin mixture. I'm not so sure it helped all that much. My urethra is so sore from the cath.
I'm really working on breathing deeply and relaxing.

I just had my 2nd cysto/hydro w/ retrogrades yesterday... my bladder only holds 1/3 of what a normal bladder holds.. uro thinks its a birth defect because of how small it is.. and weird thing is im only 19 yrs old and the first thing he said 2 my mom was "shes had kids before right"? mom was like no.. never.. i forget the medical words were but basically my bladder has already started to fall... and he said that usually happens when women give birth... has anyone had this before??

My bladder under sedation during a cysto/hydro held 450cc. I can say for sure how much I hold during waking hours, although I know its not much. Like when I have to go for UTI checks in the cup the glass has very little to work with. If I hold it to long I am miserable, like all the rest of us.

Hey! I read about this several year ago here on this board and wanted to share it with you.

I had a horrible time after being cath, so after reading about it, I now ALWAYS ask for the cath to be "dipped" into lidocane.
Girls (and boys), I am telling you......that has made a world of difference for me!

I had a new nurse that was intstilling the DMSO, and when I reminded her about putting the lidocane on the cath, she said, "hun, (yes, I'm from the South!) lidocane is in the mixture." :loco:

Very nicely, I reminded her that didn't help me any as the cath was be inserted! I even WATCHED to make sure she put the lidocane on my cath first. (She did!) :)

That had helped me A LOT!!!!!!!!
Hope this is useful info for some of you and will save someone some pain from being cath.

I was able to hold 650 cc during my Hydro. But, my bladder tore during the procedure. Can't hold near that while awake though. Can't remember how much though.

I had hydro yesterday. They sent me home without a cath (big mistake) and two hours later I was in the ER getting cathed. !000 ml came out right away. What a relief!!!

Ouch...hopefully things are working today. How is your bladder feeling otherwise? I had my hydro yesterday too...no change in the volume it holds...it had the glomerulations like expected, so at least it isn't worse.

before my hydro I could hold 25 to 50 ccs before tinkling. On hydo, initially I could hold 200 ccs max under anesthesia...but after distention he distended it to 500 ccs, which my uro told me was half the normal size bladder. So I am happy to have half of normal instead of 1/4th like before!

wow I had my cysto done i guess only being able to hold 200cc's of urine is really bad. comparing you should be able to hold 1000 cc's. so my being only being able to only hold 200 cc's is really scary.

I know this must sound crazy but how do u guys measure your urine? I mean how do u know how much your bladder holds while your awake? Is there some kind of formula to use? Do you take the urine amount through out the day and then average it out at the end of the day? I had my hydro on May 23rd and it was able to hold 800cc's.

Thanks,

Were you awake???? Was it an in office cysto or cysto with hydro? I had a cysto in office and it was terrible, the hydro I had done under anesthesia.

Well the way I measured my urine when I did it was just with a regular measuring cup. IT was gross and took awhile before I got the hang of it, but after awhile it was second nature!! I then just wrote down in my output diary the time and the amount and kept track everytime I went except sometimes at night. I think it is better if you can find something with cc's but I used cups and then someone on here told me how to convert it. When I was in realy bad pain and had to go BAD, I could hold 1 1/2 cups, usually it was about 1 cup.
Yeah when I had my regular cysto my bladder only held 150 cc's, but under sedation with the distention, I think it held 650 cc's.

Thanks Sarah,
I've recorded (time and days but not how much) how many times I've gone on a weekly basis but not recently. I'm gonna try what you had done. When I had my in office cysto he didnt tell me how many cc's my bladder held but he did say it was small but under sedation with the distention he said it held 800 cc's. I dont know if everybody that has IC also has an irritable bladder. I was first diagnosed with an irritable bladder and then about a year later was diagnosed with IC.

Mine measured at 25 ccs today....I called my Family Practice dr., and she told me to (gulp) check my own urine by dipstick (I work in a Drs office) and call her back. Forget it. I'll suffer through yet another painful night. Sigh.......will we EVER get the medical world taught about IC?!?

My uro told me a normal bladder can hold 400cc. When I had the test done to see how much I could hold, it was only 150cc. That was when I was awake. I am not sure what it was when they put me to sleep.

I believe the urologist said my bladder held about 800 cc's under sedation, but it is when I'm awake that is the problem! He was surprised my bladder held this much considering the severity of my IC.

Based on a message of Dr. Evans at the Regional IC Forum, Hershey PA, September 25, 1999, who had statistics on over 350+ of his patients.

The average persons bladder capacity with hydrodistention under anesthesia who does not have IC is over 1100cc(37.2 oz.) and the average for people with IC is 575cc(19.4 oz.). Most while awake could only hold about 100cc(3.4 oz.) before needing to void.

The average person who does not have IC voids 6 times per day and the average for people with IC is 16 times per day (average for men is 25 times per day). Average night time voids = 5.

I was diagnosed with IC in 1990.
This is the OPERATIVE NOTES of my second cystoscopy, hydrodistention
It gives you an idea of what is going on while you are under.
Unfortunately, I do not have the records of my first cystoscopy, hydrodistention. I waited to long to request my Medical Records.
I would suggest that everyone keep a copy of their Medical Records.

OPERATIVE NOTES
----------------------------------------------
PRE-OPERATIVE DIAGNOSIS: Interstitial cystitis

POST-OPERATIVE DIAGNOSIS: Same

OPERATIVE PROCEDURE: Cystoscopy, hydrodistention of the bladder

ANESTHESIA: General

DESSCRIPTION: After informed consent the patient was brought to the operating room suite. After induction of general anesthesia, the patient was placed in the dorsolithotomy position, his perineum and genitalia were prepped and draped in the usual fashion. The 22 scope was introduced under direct vision. The urethra was within normal limits, the prostate was nonobstructing, the bladder was entered without difficulty and drained. A systematic evaluation of the bladder, it was markedly erythematous, there was no evidence of tumors, diverticula, foreign bodies or stones. At this point the bladder was hydrodistended three times. Despite over 100 cm of water, the maximum volume that we could get his bladder to distend was 300 cc. There was marked hemorrhagic cystitis with puntation, bleeding and glomerulation within the bladder mucosa. This was done three times total. Intravenous Toradol was given. The patient went to the recovery room in satisfactory condition.
----------------------------------------------

Unfortunally I had to be admitted into the hospital over night.

HOSPITAL SUMMARY
----------------------------------------------
This patient was admitted from the USC after hydrodistention of the bladder. He had a lot of hemorrhagic cystitis and a lot of nausea and vomiting. He was admitted over night. I plan to see him back 2-3 weeks. I sent him home with a prescription for Valium for his interstitial cystitis as well as low dose antibiotics. He is going to be a decent candidate for bladder augmentation.
----------------------------------------------
