Hi Ladies,

2 Weeks ago I had a biopsy and hydro, I was hospitalized for 4 days and sent home with the catheter... I had to have the catheter in for 1 1/2 weeks. I am still in a LOT of pain, worse than before the procedure. Did anyone else have these kinds of problems? Will it go away soon??? I am back to work now and am dying!!! I had to take sooo much vicoden yesterday that I sounded like an idiot with customers. Thank God the other guy I work with stepped in and helped me quite a bit...

Also, I am thinking about quitting smoking. Does anyone know what the side affects from the gum would be? I do not eat any sugar so I am wondering if there is a sugar free hard candy out there that I can suck on to get me through the first couple of weeks.

Thanks

Gina

Have you been checked for infection? It is so common to develop a UTI after having a catheter in - I would definitely check into that. I developed a UTI after my cysto w/ hydro - even though I was on preventive antibiotics for 3 days!

yes, I had one while I was in the hospital, however it is gone now... they actually put me on antibiotics for 12 days... so I dont think it is an infection at this point

Was there a reason they kept you in the hospital for 4 days and then left the catheter in so long? That seems to be longer than usual.

If you're still in pain, I suggest you be checked again for infection.

Smoking can be a bladder irritant. When I quit I used nicotine gum because it was the only thing available then. Now there are patches, etc., to make it much easier.

Good luck with the no smoking.

They kept me because the pain was extremely severe... I never thought I would say this after having 4 children, but I would have rather been in labor. The pain was waaay more severe than labor pains. I guess my bladder stopped functioning as well. I could go pee a little bit, however I was unable to totally empty it. And, when I did go that little bit the pain would sky ricket completely out of control and they had to use IV pain meds to address the pain. After the 4 days I was ok with just vicoden as long as the catheter was still in. We tried removing 3 times before I could tolerate it being out which was a week after I left the hospital. The whole thing was a nightmare and I do not think I would do it again :( Now that things are calmed down I am in more pain than I was prior to the procedure. I hope this doesnt last

Has anyone else had this type of reaction?

If you look at the pictures of a bladder on this site (go to the Home page) after a dilitation, you will see WHY we hurt so much after!!! I wish I had these pictures before so I could have posted them on my frig to make my family understand how badly I was hurting! Hang in there, put on some soft soothing music, think about a pretty place (that DOESN'T have running water...that will make you have to pee....LOL!) and just know that it DOES get better!

You said something that I could relate to.....

I had my hydro on April 15. I am hurting so, so bad. I see my urologist tomorrow, and I was on antibotics for 4 days afterwards. But, I think I might have a UTI---My urine was cloudy yesterday, and the pain in my pelvic area is so intense and my lower back is killing me. I was told this would would make me better, but I have not seen that yet. I am sick of this.

You should check for an infection. I only had one infection in my life and that was after the biopsy

I had my Hydro. on April 19th. I am also in more pain than before. My Uro. said it takes up to 6 weeks to see a result. I am taking vicodin for pain. Zoloft for stress[ which triggers the flare ups] and ATARAX at bedtime to help relax the bladder so I can sleep. It sounds like a UTI if the vicodin isn't taking the pain away. I'm so sorry for the trouble you went through. You really should get checked out before its too far gone. You might want to see if you have a staph infection. You can get that with dirty instruments. I was sent back to the hospital after my breast implants due to a staph infection. I was in the hospital for 1 week.A staph infection can give you lots of pain and can make you very ill. Please get checked out soon! GOOD LUCK!
