Hi Everyone,
I posted a while back about having a bad reaction to prosid. Yesterday, I was having a flare and needed some relief. I went to the medicine drawer and found a perscription that I got last summer when I had plurisy (sp?) (not IC related). It is called Propoxy-N/APAP.
I know that you should not take a perscription that your doctor is not currently aware that you are taking. I am going to talk to my uro about getting a perscription for Propoxy because, my bladder pain is gone today.
Does anyone else take Propoxy for pain? Does anyone know what Propoxy is? I think it is a strong aspirin?

Propoxy-N / APAP
Combination medicines containing narcotic analgesics and acetaminophen are used to relieve pain. A narcotic analgesic and acetaminophen used together may provide better pain relief than either medicine used alone. In some cases, relief of pain may come at lower doses of each medicine. Narcotic analgesics act in the central nervous system (CNS) to relieve pain. This pain medication can be habit-forming. If you take this drug over a long period of time, you can become both mentally and physically dependent on it, and you may find that it no longer works for you at the prescribed dose. Take Propoxy-N/APAP exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor .

The brand name for this is Darvocet N100 ( I work in a Dr.s office) and while it's true that it may be both psychologically and physically "addictive" those issues are most always after long term use. There are lots of better Rxs to assist with IC pain control that are non-narcotic and non-addictive, but all of us at one time or another have shared your frustration and just wanted relief....FAST! Hope you have an understanding MD or office nurse with whom you can connect on an "as needed" basis that truly understands your need for pain control an IC flares. Good luck, and hang in there!

I took Darvocet for a while in the beginning -- the uro I saw before this would prescribe that for flares. Sometimes it would take the edge off, but sometimes it would not. Later, I ended up switching uros because that uro wanted to do DMSO all the time and thought it was a "cure-all" for IC -- but it was not helping me and he wasn't interested in allowing me to try a different line of treatment. Now, my new uro prescribes other pain medications to help control my pain, and I am much more comfortable.
However, if the Darvocet helps you, by all means ask your uro for a script to keep around in case of pain. It is one of the "lighter" narcotic medications and he may be willing to prescribe for you. The good thing is that since it is lighter, at least here in TN (dunno about where you are), you are allowed to have refills on that prescription (unlike scripts for Percocet, where you need a new written prescription every time you need a refill) so you may be able to get your doc to prescribe it with a few refills, so that if you have a flare, you can fill it quickly at the pharmacy and get some relief for a few days.
I believe it's good to have something for pain around, because I believe catching pain early is the best way to handle it -- usually, if I take something before the pain gets bad, I am able to take less medication in the long run to get through the flare -- definitely a good thing, because after all this time, I still have periods of guilt about narcotic use even though my uro (who is also a pain specialist) insists that it is better to be comfortable even if it takes a narcotic. I know she's right... but still, sometimes I feel twinges of guilt anyway.
:grouphug: :grouphug: I hope you feel better soon!

Thank you everyone,
I appreciate all of the info. While the propoxy does help during the evening, I need something different during the day. I am flaring right now and am at work, so very hesitant to take the propoxy because it makes me very drowsy. Any suggestions to talk to my uro about? I appreciate all of the input! This is the best message board around!
