View Full Version : Having second thoughts

I am having my ovaries surgically removed soon, due to the finding of two endometriomas on my right ovary following an ultrasound. The gyno wants to remove the cysts and I said, take the ovaries too. (Just one less place to worry about getting cancer, right?) Since I'll already be under general anesthesia, I am also going to have my uro there at the same time to do a hydrodistention with random biopsies, as I am not totally convinced that I have I.C.

But, I'm now having second thoughts about doing the hydro/biopsies at the same time as my ovary surgery, as I have heard the procedure causes prolonged bladder pain, urgency and frequency thereafter, and I don't want to stir things up. I have been doing pretty well with less frequency lately, and don't want to try and "fix it if it ain't broken" as they say.

The biospies will give me tremendous peace of mind, as I'm worried about cancer too, even though they've done some other tests for cancer that were all negative. What should I do? My gyno thinks my ovarian cysts may be causing all the bladder pressure and frequency, so removing them may solve the problem. But if it doesn't, I don't want to undergo general anesthesia all over again with the hydro and biopsies.

Any advice? I'm sure lots of you have had hydrodistensions and/or biopsies done. Please share your experiences with me, so that I can make the right decision. Thank you. :)

I know my experience with the cysto/hydro was not bad. I peed blood for a while afterwards, and needed to take pain medication after for several days, but I was up and around doing things by two days post-op. I was just really tired from the anesthesia and things, but I would not say I had "prolonged worsening of symptoms."

I know we are all different, but it's nice to know that not everyone has a terrible reaction to those procedures. Your experience doesn't sound like it was too [B]horrible. I'm just afraid. Afraid of almost everything since this whole ordeal began.

I have had over thirty hydrodistentions in my 30 years since my IC diagnosis. For me, they do cause some pain for a day or two, but they help my symptoms enough to make it well worth it.

This is a decision you will have to make for yourself, but it does sound like it might give you some peace of mind.

I would have it done and get it over with to have the peace of mind. I agree with
everyone that yes you do have some pain for a few days but you will anyway with
the other surgery. I had my first hydro/cysto two weeks ago and I have no bladder
pain and my frequency and urgency is pretty normal now. I know it is a hard decision
to make. I was always very scared about the whole thing and almost canceled mine
since I was a big chicken. But I have to say I am releived that I did it since I just
got the results of the bladder biopsy yesterday and everything came back negative
so I feel very relieved. Good luck and let us know what you decide and how you
do.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I am going to go ahead and have both done at the same time. I'm nervous about pain, and not being able to pee afterwards, but will have pain meds to deal with it.

Wish me luck!

Well, I had my hydrodistension and biopsies done yesterday, along with removal of my ovaries. They found severe endometriosis along with a very large blood clot that had been there since my hysterectomy in 2003. The doctor -- my gyno -- cauterized as much of the endo as he could. He thinks that the endo is to blame for all my problems.

The uro saw one spot on my bladder that "could" be I.C. He biopsied it and we'll see what it shows.

The good news is I feel pretty good following the procedures. Just some pain from the ovaries being removed. Couldn't pee for about 4 hours afterwards, but as soon as the flood gates opened, I peed all night! Literally! I'm so releived this is done. I'm going to go lie down. Took the week off. Just wanted to let you all know that I'm fine and to thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers!

I can't advise you what to do :bonk:

I do know that having the hydro really helped me  there was a bit of discomfort and my first pee pee was really ouchy :cussing: I also had a D/C when they did my hydro both docs sent me home with pain meds

I was back to work in 2 days little by little the pain from the procedure wore off..and now I am at a point when I flare if the wind blows different :loco: just teasing ya.

I have more good than bad days Thank God I try to watch what I eat drown myself in water and use a heat pack for my flares.

meds I take are Elmeron, Elavil, Atarax, Prelief

Good Luck on your decision believe me I was scared to death too :grouphug:
