I was just wondering if anyone else had really bad kidney pain. I told my doctor when he diagnosed me with IC that I have the same kind of pain in my kidneys also, he said that you can only have IC in your bladder. I have had these symptoms for over 15 years, maybe having IC has also damaged them. If anyone has any clue or also has this kind of pain and doesn't mind sharing, please do. Thanks in advance, you guys are always great.

There are many people on the site who seem to have kidney pain with their IC like you do -- in fact, during my worst flares I've had this as well. First of all, be checked to make sure you are infection free, and if you are, then -- perhaps alternating heat and cold on your back can help. It seems to help me out a little bit. Perhaps others with the same problem will come on soon to give you more advice on this... :)

I'm if the ic could make it worse. The membrane of my kidneys are thinning. Do you have blood in your urine all the time? I also get sharp pain sometimes, i'm really not sure which on ic causing it.

Yes hon i have had the same pain most of the time it was a kidney infection but in some cases it wasn't after my doctor and I talked about it he believes i may have cystitis of the kidney there is no test to prove this yet but its a systom a lot like i.c but we have it in the kidney. this could be your problem. I have had ivp cat scan blood work and other test i don't remember the name of to try to find out if there any damage but couldn't find out anything. so all is left is the cystitis of the kidney idea. Please note i'm only telling you what i have been told by my doctor for myself. I can't say this is what is wrong with you.
sending you hugs and prayers

i have also had kidney pain, it was part of what linked my doctor to my diagnosis of ic. i have suffered from kidney infections since i was 6 yrs old, and lower back pain since before that. the doctors always treated the infections with antibiotics and the back pain with muscle relaxers, pain killers, or going to therapy for them to shock the muscles with electrodes after they poped my back. one day the "doctor" at the therapy session didnt believe that i could self diagnose the kidney infections by now(i was 20 yrs) so he used an old test that hasnt been used since the 1970s(it was in 2002) and punched my kidney. needless to say i never went back and he no longer has a license....anyway, back to the point. kidney pain can be a big part of the diagnosis in some patients and as much so as the pain in the bladder at times...most of the people in my area that i have discused ic with have said that they too have the pain in the kidneys and that it is do to the ic. some people have dull constant pain or in my case they have the constant pain plus stabbing pain too. i wish you luck in getting better....i have found that heat and ice packs help when alternated....
:grouphug: i hope this helps....im kind of rambling because i cant sleep, lol

I do have kidney pains and it comes in spurts and somtimes last for days.. I would thin that it is possible fo IC to be so bad it can be in your kidneys.. but how would they test it?? I was once told that it you had your bladder removed that it was possible for ic to move to your kidneys... I wish I knew becasue all of us that are having kidney pain still have there bladders....

I, too am another fellow kidney pain sufferer most of the time. I know when it gets real bad it's an infection or when I suffer from bouts of retention. When I retain, it backs up into my kidneys and then they swell 2-3 times their normal size. I believe what Dixiefireball says about IC getting so bad that it eventually spreads up into the kidneys but like you all have said I don't know how they'd ever test for that, but I'm sure as time and medicine proceed into the future they'll come up with something. So as you see, you're not alone in suffering in kidney pain (flank pain). When my MD sent me to a University Hospital's pain clinic, I was having horrible kidney pain that day and he used the rubber reflex mallet to pound really hard on my kidneys and it hurt SOOOOOO BAD! Some doctors just don't care/understand.
Hope you feel better soon, hon.
