I was not sure where to post this...Anyway, I am new to IC, and new to Elmiron. I am seeing all of this stuff that says that you should not take any other anti-inflammatory drugs (ex.-ibuprofen) while taking Elmiron. Has anyone else heard of this? What is the reason? I like to take ibuprofen for headaches- should I stop? Also, my pain dr. gave me some kind of anti-inflammatory (I think it is herbal) to take. Is that ok? I told him that I was taking Elmiron, but I don't really know how much he knows about it.

I don't know about anti inflammatories with Elmiron...I hadn't heard that. What I know is that ibuprofen is acidic and not good for IC!!!!

I just went through the elmiron information and did not see any drug interactions.

My guess is that you saw info about not taking ibuprofen because it is acidic....and the best way to feel better and have successful treatment is to avoid acid.

I hope you get good results with Elmiron!

I think that some anti-inflamatory products have blood thinning properties similiar to Elmiron which is why it is advised to avoid them. When I was trying to take Elmiron, I got permission from my doctor to take some form of an anti-inflamatory. I would suggest you call your doctor and see what he/she recommends.

I take elmiron and celebrex ( I know there's a big debate about it, but it has helped me a lot!). My doctor prescribes both. I've had no problem. liz

Clownster is right - Elmiron has slight blood thinning properties so they want you to be careful when you take other meds with similar properties. I take the occasional ibuprofen (which is a trigger for many of us, but I am OK with it) and I have been fine. :)

Thanks for the info. I did ask my dr. about it today. He said that you just shouldn't over-do it due to the blood thinning issue. But, he said it is ok to take Ibuprofen for a headache (or whatever) once in awhile. But, I did not know that it was acidic! Maybe I will have to switch to Tylenol or something. Is that acidic?

I take ibuprofen with a couple of prelief and I'm usually okay. I do the same with tylenol.

I hope this helps you!

I just got some Prelief the other day. Is that harmful at all to take? Is it ok to take it often? Just wondering because I have been taking it if I want some chocolate or a cup of coffee. With all of these meds, I am just wondering what is too much, ya know?

Prelief is just a certain form of calcium. My doctor told me to take it as often as I need to. I took it more when I was first diagnosed and much less now (but still pretty often). You may want to double check with your own doctor just to be certain it's okay for you.

Hope this helps!
