I was just wondering: is the chemically treated/ chlorine saturated swimming pool water BAD for IC? And what about the ocean water? Anyone has any idea?

I don't know about ocean water nor do I really know about swimming pool water but I do believe that the chemicals in pool water can definitely have an effect. As a matter of fact, my IC symptoms didn't start until after I installed a swimming pool of my own. Maybe all those chemicals stirred it up to start with. Hmmmmm.

Neither are a problem for me...but I can only comment on chlorine treated pools. My husband is a chemist and he is a reklentless water quality control freak....lucky for me.

My kids used to have eye irritation and rash sometimes from the other pool solution, and the name escapes me. but it begns with a B! Bromine!

I also "lived" in a aquapool on a cruise-full of minerals and other things, as it was the spa pool....it was heaven and I didn't have any problems. It was about as soothing as it gets actually...

Clorine is a problem for many ICers. One of the things I totally loved about Hawaii was the warm ocean to swim in --- and no problem for me.

I haven't had any problems in a chlorinated pool (although I know some others have) or in the ocean. :)

We are getting a hot tub in a week and I am hoping that I will be able to use it without any problems. I am worried about the chemicals irritating my IC.

I have no trouble with pools or ocean swimming -- some do, but I'm one of the lucky ones! I just make sure I don't sit around in a wet bathing suit too long, as this can cause me to get a raging yeast infection, and THAT can make my IC act up.

If I stay to long in a pool it can cause problems but the ocean is fine...thank goodness since I am a beach bum and love swimming in the ocean..

:grouphug: I can swim in both, but ocean water is so much more fun. Can't wait to go to Florida next month!

Why do you think the ocean is 'safer' than the swimming pools? The chemicals?

Many public pools have a lot of clorine and some ICers have a problem with clorine.

That's what I thought. How do the chemicals get into our bladder, though? Do they swim up or something?

I'm assuming chemicals are absorbed by the skin and some are inhaled.
