--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was just diagnosed about a month ago. I have not been successful in following the diet and taking my medication regulary. The only symptom that I have read is pain with sex which I have but I really don't have any other symptoms. What should I be looking for? I followed the diet for 2 wks I think successfully but did not feel any different the same with the meds. How should I be feeling? I am very lost. What does the future entail?

First of all, I'd like to say :welcome: to the IC Network. You'll find a lot of information and support here.

I suggest you read the information in the Patient Handbook at http://www.ic-network.com/handbook The Handbook contains information about the various treatment options available.

Some of the medications can take a while to be effective. For example, elmiron can take six months or more before it begins to help.

Sending warm healing thoughts,
Donna

Hi :welcome:
I agree with Donna, the medications and even the diet can take awhile especially if your IC is way out of control. Hang in there, keep trying the meds and diet. Most importantly work closely with your doctor, and be willing to try other things even. It can take time, and sometimes it can be a lot of trial and error until you find what works for you. It took me a long time to find the right treatment.
Good luck and know that you are never alone when you visit this message board. There is SO much informations, support and understanding here. :grouphug:

Just want to welcome you to the ICN :)

I agree; both the diet and the meds can take a while. Donna's right that Elmiron takes 6 months or more in many cases to become effective; meds like Ditropan or Detrol, if they are going to help, can take up to 6 weeks. So if you've only just begun taking things, it's best to be patient for a few months. Also, Amy's right -- you should discuss your symptoms again with your doctor. Perhaps there is something they can do for you in the interim/short term -- pain meds, instillations, or other things that tend to work faster.

I agree, you really need to give the diet a try and see how it makes you feel. I have been in a REALLY bad flare and never thought the diet was that important and now I am realizing it is a so good to see what affects you...I am also on Elmiron, Ditropan XL, Zyrtec, BC pills and doing home installations....so talk to your MD and hang in there....we are all in this together.
