Hi-
So I got my 1st dose of Heparin a little over 24 hrs ago. Today I just am having twinges in my bladder, not real pain but just fast, sharp twinges that make you say "hey what was that?". They feel like they are in my bladder but occaisionally go down the urerthra. And of course my pee is like peeing fire, but when isn't it? I am really trying to stay on the diet. Do you have to be strict on the diet when you are getting Heparin? Will it affect it if you cheat? Anyone else have these twinges after Heparin??
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jill,
I had the same things happen to me while first doing the heparin. After the first 6 months they were less often to where now just once in a while. I don't follow the ic diet at all. Doesn't really help me any.

I don't think the diet should effect Heparin all that much....Sounds to me like you may be having some bladder spasms. Definatly talk to your doctor about this....he can probably help.
http://www.ic-network.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7562 this link is a pain managment post.
The second page has 4 attachments...the last one is a list of ideas for IC pain.....take a look if pain is problem for you. In the list I have some herbs that can help with spasms to help get you through. Be very careful though!!!!
:grouphug: Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks you Katrina and Betty! That list is great Katrina, I am going to print it to have as a guide. I guess it maybe spasms, I do get them a lot. Do you get them everytime you have the Heparin put in? I have 5 weeks to go, sigh.

No, I didn't get the spasms everytime I had the heparin done. Plus after the first 6 months things seemed to get better peeing wise. (Once in awhile with the pain too). Instead of getting up at night every 15 minutes when the heparin helps I only get up once. Plus not peeing so much during the day. The first day it helped I was kind of lost. My mind and body didn't know what to do when I walked past the bathroom and didn't have to go. I stood there for a few minutes thinking what should I do? ha Good luck with it and give it time to help.

You could be having some spasms from being catheterized. I suggest you talk with your doctor about trying an antispasmodic after a treatment.

Melinda, I think it was Heparin and Marcaine or something that was supposed to act as a numbing agent when they did the cath and instillation. I am going in every Wednesday for the next 5 weeks. I am just going to tell the nurse (the doc doesn't see me again until week 5) that I have got to have something for the spasms afterwards. Any suggestions? I cannot miss any more work with this afwul disease. It is so frustrating, you feel like crap but you look fine. "You don't look sick" is my mother's favorite, also, "if you miss any more work you are going to lose your job and then where will you be?" My own mother doesn't understand what I am going through. I am 36 yo I know I am sick, thanks for caring mom! Sorry, about that but I get so stressed with your own family that doesn't believe your sick.

Hi Jillie.
I am so sorry you are going through this too. I have not been ofically diagnosed as of yet because my symptoms came on as I was going thru an IVF cycle. Basically, it started out as burning urethra 24/7 after taking 3 days of Macrobid (for what I thought was a uti) & then 6 days of Cipro. The Cipro is what destroyed me! Now the burning has calmed down somewhat ( still irritated though), but I experience the burning on & off in my bladder. The urogynecologist I saw last week offered to do heprin/sodium bicarbonate/kellog (a steroid) & marcaine instillations. He checked it with my OB & it is supposedly safe in pregnancy. I am about 9 weeks along. I am 34, will be 35 in June. I do not have urgency/frequency, but do experience at times those burning "bladder" spasms.
Did the catheter hurt going in? That is what I am most afraid of! Are you still "burning"? I already have urethral pain! He said he would drag the last 5 - 10cc's down my urethra at the end. I think the problem for me is in the neck of the bladder where my bladder & urethra join.
I am a stay at home mom to my 5 year old son. I can't imagine how hard it must be for you to work! I too get"but you look great" all the time & it is so frustartating!
Please feel free to e-mail me at melindap@optonline.net. It is nice to have someone to share all this with! I pray we get better soon!

Thanks so much Melinda, the cath didn't hurt at all I think they used a real small one because usually they do hurt me. I was also fine the day of the procedure, it just turned around that night and yesterday. I feel better today, I took a warm bath last night and some Lortab. I just am not looking forward to 5 more weeks of this. Have you been through any tests like CMG, hydro, cysto? So you started having symptoms with your IVF? I wish you good luck also. I would love to email ya and have someone near my age that is dealing with the same thing. Thanks again!

I am glad you are starting to feel better. If I may ask, what is Lortab? I probably could not use it during pregnancy :(. Also, what are your symptoms? Do you have any urethral discomfort normally?

Lortab is a narcotic painkiller. It works pretty well for me. My symptoms were and still are depending on the day, diet etc: burning when I pee, uretheral pain and burning, lower abd pain, vaginal pain (kind of a shooting type pain there), urge/frequency. It sometimes hurt to just sit down. This is by far the weirdest and most tempermental disease I have heard of. I am doing much better today and it's back to work tomorrow, ugh.
