Do you need to have your doctor sign papers for you in order to apply for Disability? Years ago I asked my primary to sign papers for disability and she said she would not because she did not know enough about IC. Do they send you to their doctor anyway? Just wondering how that works.

Hi you dont need the doctor to sign papers to get the ball going. But it is best to have at least one doctor on your side. They will request your medical records from your doctor. It would be good if you could get one dr it does not have to be your uro to write a letter on your behalf about your disability. My gyno wrote mine. They (SS) usually send you to see one of their doctors, but dont depend on them knowing much if anything about IC. Their doc (SS) is the reason I got turned down the first time. I won on my appeal. Best of luck to you...

I guess all have different procedures, but when I checked into this at my HR department, they said that I would have to have my doctor fill out one part of a 3 or 4 part form in order to get started. After that they may have you see their doctor. In my case my doctor has to fill out his part of this form saying that I am unable to work, why I can't work and if it is temporary or permanent.

Hi Steve, you are right with disability from your work. You do have to have the doctor fill this out for you and also how long you might be off and so forth and also if it is permant or short term disability. But when you apply for Social Security Benefits, you do not have to get a doctor to start the ball running for their benefits. Although it benefits you to have at least one dr on your side when you start the process with them. You can also either do this at your local SS office, on the phone or over the internet, which is what I did. I know when I to be off from a surgery I had when I worked the dr had to fill out the paperwork for me to be able to continue to rec. money from work. With me I was a salaried employee and the first weeks I rec. what I would if I worked 40 hours then after that I got 60% pay.
