Gentamicin in Instillation

Hi everyone,
Lately I have seen that one of the ingrediants in some instillations is Gentamicin.......could someone tell me (and other curious people) what this ingrediant does and how long it has been around. Is is something new?

Gentamicin is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is especially helpful for GYN and uro bacteria.
