View Full Version : What is a normal capacity for a bladder?

I just got my patient records today after I requested them last week. I was wondering about bladder capacity. When I got my ultrasound last week, my bladder was SO FULL that I thought I was going to pass out. The ultrasound shows it was 345cc. After voiding it was 25cc. Is that low, normal, or high? Is it supposed to be completely empty after voiding or is 25cc ok to have in there. I didn't have my hydro/cysto yet so I don't know how big my bladder really is...but that 345cc felt the fullest my bladder could ever go! :toilet:

Hi there. Have you ever measured your urine output at home? I have a catch pan that measures it that I used when I was first diagnosed to document symptoms. It might be interesting to see how 345 cc compares to what you find. (How accurate is the ultrasound in estimating capacity?)

I actually can hold about 600 cc sometimes, but that is the exception, not the norm. By then I can barely walk, I am in so much pain. I don't know how much is supposed to be left in the bladder when you are finished voiding.

an non icer bladder holds i believe i was told a 1000cc or more i hold 750cc which isn't bad for an ic bladder.

i took 400 ml's. i read an aarticle on urologytimes.com that stated that bladde failure is 250 ml's. i think a regular bladder can take up to about 1600 ml's, right?!

Normal bladder capacity when awake is about 500 cc, which is about a pint. Under anesthesia, capacity is about double that. A residual of 25 cc is not bad --- that's only about a tenth of a cup.

The first time I seen one of my URO's my baldder held 350cc's, the last time I went ( a few months ago) it only held 120cc's, I hope it dosn't get any lower then that or I could be in real trouble.

Sometimes my bladder holds 350ml /little over 1cup/ of urine. I use old plastic cap to see how much urine is there.
Most of the time when I feel pressure /which is almost all the time/ my bladder holds only 50ml - 1/4 cup.
In the morning usually 250-300ml /1cup or bit more/ and sometimes it hold few drops.

Mine under anthesia with the first Hydro I had done was around 450 cc then last august when I had the last one done it held 500 cc. I really have never measured it under normal circumstances but I know I cant hold very much without experience severe pain. I also thought under anthesia normal capacity should be around 1000 cc or slightly more.

I "think" I can only hold 200 cc. Not much anyway. Not much at all.

go to page three; it talks about bladder capacity.
page two talks a little about it, too.

take 1200 to 1600 ml's awake? is that too much?

hmmm...

if a bladder can hold 500 ml's under anaesthesia, doesn't that mean that in waking hours, the bladder can only take half of that?

i know when i give my specimen at the doctors office, it has not even an inch in it. afterm y instills, it does hold more.

donna, you seem to know a lot about this subject. if you could, please comment.

thanks...

Wow its amazing me how so many ppl are getting 1000cc and 1500cc my uro told me the average for bladder capacity was around 600ml or cc which is the equal to about 2 1/2 cups. Boy I would be in heaven if I could hold 1000cc wow thats like not having to go pee for the whole day. Anyway my bladder held 200cc and the doc stretched it to hold 400cc.

I think I had 1200 during my hydro/cyst under anesthesia-obviously it is able to hold much more under this condition...but according to the above comments, would make me a non-ICer. When I saw Dr Sant for a second opinion, he felt that was a normal amount for the mild to moderate IC patient and in fact doubled my elmiron due to success backtracking...so I am not sure if there is a rule of thumb on bladder capacity, I think it is more about the combination of symptoms and findings during the scope/biopsy. Regardless, I am thrilled to be feeloing success and on a treatment path that seems to work quote well for me.

Ditto large capacity here..my Uro told me I hold about a liter 1000ml distended, I was diagnosed with I believe a mild case..mostly urgency/pressure in the pelvic region and during my cycles bad flares..this disease is complicated and really not a "one symptom fits all"..
My .02 cents.

Mine was distended to 1275 ml under anesthesia.

Had urinary retention after the hydro and was hospitalized and cathed and drained of about 1000 ml. That 1000 ml while awake was pain off the charts.

I know this is an old thread, but I think it's got some good info, so decided to post on it, as I always forget what capacity is considered normal.

I have normal bladder capacity, but still have IC.

Questioning for another member: If you have IC symptoms and normal bladder capacity, would a hydrodistension to only 500 ml be enough to show that pinpoint bleeding that they say is indicative of IC?

I haven't read the links yet. It's interesting to know all of your capacities. Mine was 700 with my first hydro. My second was 550ml. I usually wake up once a night to pee. Does it usually diminish??? I'm so scared of that!
Anyone feel like the hydros decreased your overall capacity?

I had some problems urinating after a surgery and had to be catheterized. They said that 100 cc or more left in the bladder after urinating was too much.

Mine was only 90cc while awake and almost 500 while under after they stretched it. I don't know what it was while under anesthesia before the stretching. All I know is...I spend WAY, WAY too much time in a bathroom!!! :bonk:

When I was tracking my input and output, I found the max output was 600 ml. Interestingly, when I felt the need to go before this, it was often at the 300ml level.

I am not too sure....i want to go read my records from my cystoscopy tonight. I just know that during my surgery it took the urologist 3 or more times to get my bladder to where it was holding a normal amount of fluid.

And i wake up at least once a night to pee. Quite annoying if you ask me.

when I measure at home my maximum capacity is roughly 1/4 cup. Last week I managed to get 1/2 cup, but I was drunk and my bladder was numb (and yes I paid for it).

I don't know what my capacity under anesthesia is. When I was first dx with IC my capacity was supposedly only a few tablespoons (thats what my mother says, I don't remember my uro saying this to me at all). In any case it was tiny. When I was in remission I was one of those people that could pee so much that it would last over a minute! Oh those were the days...I have a feeling another "stretching" might be in order.

Under anesthesia they could almost get 300cc into me.
I go to the bathroom every few minutes to a half hour.
And at least six time on a good night.
Sometimes I get stuck on the toilet for an hour or so because right when I empty my bladder I can feel it feeling up. And will have to go again in a matter of seconds.

if my uro only distended my bladder to 450cc, does this count as checking for bladder capacity? It obviously can't be b/c I can hold up to 620cc's awake (it is very uncomfortable though). So I guess my question is, does a bladder distension always mean that it is stressed to capacity??

not 620cc's when awake, 480cc's...haha I wish

My capacity under anesthesia was 150cc. The surgeon tried a second time and the pictures were not a pretty site - unless you think it was a picture of Mars.
Once a night would be bliss. I'm trying Lunestra tonight to see if I can make it with less than 10 visits to the bathroom.

Not sure about that. I was stretched to 600ml with the hydro, but I'm a bit of an odd duck my doc says. I am unable to empty my bladder completely which is why I cath just before bed and when I first wake up. At night I cath in the hopes of getting up to pee a little less and first thing in the morning because I spasm so bad I can't pee sometimes. I usually get up about 4-8 times a night still. I can usually pee 100-150ml and then cath myself for 150- 200ml right after. Surprisingly I find I have fewer UTI's when I cath because I don't have that stagnant urine sitting there. No matter what meds I'm on or what they try I just can't empty it on my own.

My last cysto and dillation we got something like 200. He was doing a urethra sling at the same time and didn't want to do to much. I was know more on the 9th of Feb. when he does his next cysto. He probably will recommend dilation. I am going to start a diary for him.

thnx for the replies, I was just not sure whether bladder capacity should have been tested and sometimes my doctor gives me the runaround when I ask questions such as "oh take the medicine, you'll be fine" kind of thing so I just was wondering if that was my capacity at the time

Yes, I feel that ever since my cysto/hydro/biopsy a little over a month ago, I cannot hold as much as I used to!

I have had lots of hydrodistentions (#40 was in February 2006) and I am stretched anywhere from 500 cc to 800 cc --- last time it was 700. It varies.
