I go see my PCP tommorow, who wants to do an Endoscopy and a Colonoscopy. My GYN, that's who DXD me with IC, said that there was no need to do a scope of my bladder with hydodestention to confirm. I want to have it done while they have me under general anesthesia (sp?) for the other tests. I am thinking of filing for disability, I have lots of chronic conditions that are not responding well to meds or diet changes. I was wondering if anyone else had theses kinds of tests grouped together? If so, how did it go? I am newly DXD with IC, but like most of you have had symptoms for years, over ten in my case. Would appreciate any info you have to share.

my colonoscopy, endoscopy and ultrasound endoscopy were all done at seperate times.
I have had a cystoscope/hydrodistention/lapo done at same time last march with uro and gyn.

You are not a lone with have a lot of chronic conditions. I have had many tests together before...but not those two sorry. It makes for a big day...but for the most part I was just rolled around to different places. Is your colonscopy being done under general anesthesia too?? With me and having IC I want mine done under anesthesia because the pain later from so much pressure sometimes is bad...just a warning to you. I hope your tests go well and things turn out ok. Like you I had symptoms for ten years before diagnosis :( :grouphug:

its normal to have those two tests performed the same day; the endoscopy is usually done first, then the colonoscopy. I'm not sure who told you that you'll be under general anesthesia, as these tests are (generally) performed with only light sedation and pain reliever, via IV (though the sedation is usually enough that most people sleep through the procedures).

Thanks for replying so fast. I'm reading on other boards about how many hydros some people have had. Do you just end up getting them forever? I'm scared of being put under that many times, that's why I want to have all my scopes done at the same time. I also have Fibromyalgia, so I'm not looking forward to having my blader and the ligaments associated with it stretched. I can't emagine having it done all the time. As far as who told me that I was going to be givin a general, that's just how they do it here. I've had the scopes done before in another state. For the endoscopy they gave me a seditive and it did nothing, they even did a biopsy of my stomach. I have a rather high tolerance for meds. For the colonoscopy, they gave me nothing. Because I'm afraid of being put under so many times I want to have all three done at the same time, but if the hydro is going to cause that much my doctor might want to admit me so he can give me something to help with pain. I hate having such a high tolerance for meds.

i forgot to add that i've never heard of anyone having the hydrodistention done at the same time as the endoscopy/colonoscopy. You're going to have to address this with both your GI Dr and your urologist to get their medical opinion.
I had a hydrodistention done 1.5 years ago and had no problems with it whatsoever; I had biopsies taken at the same time, which is fairly standard procedure during the first hydro.
So give your Dr's a call to see if its possible to have these tests done at the same time; hopefully it'll all work out for you with the least possible stress.
stay well

Has anyone had a hyrdo and beenfully awake for it? Just curious and catious. How bad is the pain after? I don't respond well to meds. An examlpe, a lot of you take or have taken Elivil, they put me on it a few years ago. I started at 25mg, they told me if this was to strong that they could lower my dosage to 10mg. Within six weeks I was taking 150mg to help make me sleepy at bed time. After about two years of taking it, it stopped helping. They added Ambien and I was also taking Melatonin, still nothing. I'm more worried about the pain after than during. I also can't use heat therapy because it cause swelling, and cold causes pain of a different kind. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? I don't know what else to try. I have always been this way, as a child they had to give me adult meds. I even have tried taking long "breaks" from the meds and still doesn't help, so it's not like I'm building up a tolerance to them. Please help.

I am one who has had many hydrodistentions. My choice of anesthesia is spinal. I don't feel the procedure and it takes a couple of hours afterwards for the bladder to "thaw out" so the initial pain just isn't there. My doctor keeps me in the hospital overnight and by the time I go home, I don't usually need more than a few pain medications.

I too, have several chronic conditions - esophageal spasms - treated with nitro and exacerbated by certain pain meds and foods, breast cancer survior, hypothyroidism (diagonsed this year), osteoporosis and have probably had IC since i was 5 or 6. Just diagnosed last year. Had two cysto and hydros this year. I now take over 17 pills a day. Life is not always fun. I just went to part-time teaching instead of full-time. i am just tired of the pain.

Some people have had a hydrodistention and been fully awake...and usually that is a horor story...I don't think it is a good idea at all. ICers often find their first hydro to be pretty bad....after treatment starts they get a lot better.

Mwhjep, moisture may help...like not just baths (which only no soap baths are recomended and no longer than 15 minutes) but also wash cloths at the bladder.http://www.ic-network.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7562 this link is a pain managment post.
The second page has 4 attachments...the last one is a list of ideas for IC pain.....take a look if pain is problem for you. I highly recommend antacids and bakingsoda...prelief...whatever you like best. I use topical analgesics such things with methol like blue goo.

cnitzken, I have about 17 conditions. I praise you for being a cancer surviver. I don't know how many meds I take a take....I am trying to change more to a natural route so am taking huge amount of pills. Anyway, :grouphug:

There are wonderful new anesthesias that don't cause problems. I just had my 5th hydro and have no problems. Good luck and hang in there.

I also have multiple health problems and had procedures and surgies shortly after each other. It gets very tiring on the body. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
