I have severe endometriosis and need to have a hysterectomy. My Gyn usually does Vaginal hysterectomys but he is not sure if I am a good candidate for that with the IC. I go to my first Uro appt. tomorrow and plan to ask about this, but what do you think. I have always heard bad things about Vaginal hyst, such as bladder pain and leakage, etc. So, I think I want to have the abdominal hysterectomy even though it will be more painful and longer recovery time. Has anyone here had a vaginal hysterectomy and it not made their IC worse?

I had a vaginal hyst in 1998, and it was painful, but not to bad. I was just diagnosed with IC, which I think was the problem to begin with. With the abdominal hyst you have to think about scar tissue, as with the vag hyst, I don't think there is that big of a risk with the scar tissue.
Hope this help's you out a little! Good luck :) and I hope you feel better soon.

I had an abdominal hyst in 2002 due to severe endo and adhesions. I personally didn't that the abd way was bad at all, but that is me--stoic, stubborn, yada yada yada. We had no clue the IC was lurking somewher because by the end of that year I started the urinary symptoms. The best thing to do is for the uro and the GYN to pow wow and make a plan that makes sense.

Hugs,
Barb

I had a vaginal hysterectomy in 1999. I cant say that it made my IC worse I know it did not make it any better. I was not offically diagnose with IC until 2 yrs later but began having problems after having a C-section with my son in 1996. I believe having the C-section is what caused my IC problems. We thought having the hyst would help my problems but it did not. I feel either way will cause trauma to your bladder and so forth. I had alot of pain with the vaginal and I had alot of lower back pain and pelvic pain with mine. I am not sure if this is b/c of the position you are in doing the vaginal or what but I personally had alot of problems with mine. So I cant say either way is better. Some have had success with vaginally and some the old fashion way. But either way I wish you the best of luck and pray everything will turn out good for you.

I worked in a gyno office for 6 1/2 yrs. If they can do a vag. hysto. that is definetly the way to go. The risk of any major problems occuring from a vaginal surgery is considerably less than those of a major abdominal surgery. The recovery time will be alot quicker and less uncomfortable. As w/any surgery there is a chance of manipulation to any other organ or organs and that is chance that is taken w/ all major surgery's. Good Luck! Hope this info helped

I agree that if they say they can perform your hyst. vaginally that may be the best. I had an abdominal hyst. last year and recovery was painful and difficult. (although everyone heals differently) The scar tissue from surgery is an issue and that is the reason I could not have it done vaginally. My two previous c-sections caused too much scar tissue and adhesions. However my surgeon actually tried to do the hyst. vaginally first, but had me sign the release to perform the abdominal if necessary.
Good luck and best wishes!

I had an abdominal hysterectomy a little over a year ago...IT MADE MY IC WORSE! I had it for endo and had been on Lupron so hadn't had a period for a long time already. (Many people find it helps their IC because of the effect hormones have on IC) Anyway....I was worse...even though I had been helped when I began Lupron...the surgery was not easy on my bladder. I assumed that the abdominal hysterectomy was harder on IC!

i'm set up for one May 17 but that isn't written in stone yet. I told them i would agree to a partical i didn't want a whole one.
I don't have endo i was checked for that feb 8 05 thank the dear lord i dont even have a sign of it but the reason they want to do mine is because i was boarder line cancer. they said i have so much scar tissue they believe they will have to do it the old fashion way which means cut me instead of vag.
best of luck to you hon please let us know how you are and what you decided
Rhonda

I am scheduled for partial hysterect6omy March 23rd. leaving right ovary. Mine gyn said she thinks going to do abdomkinal because vaginal would be a tight squeeze and probably knock the bladder around. I was hoping for a vaginal one but I will do what she thinks is best

I had vaginal hysterectomy 3 years ago. /Carcinoma in situ/.
I stayed in hospital 2 days, no complications at all, no pain at all, went back to work /I work physically/ after 20 days. I took little slower then usually.

I have not have IC before surgery, or maybe I did but IC was sleeping ?
After vaginal hysterectomy I felt so good, very good until half of December last year when signs of IC started to show.

I will recomend vaginal hysterectomy but that need to done by expirienced doctor. :)

I had a abdominal hysterectomy in 2003 they left my right ovary and in 2004 I had to have the right ovary emergency removed it twisted itself and cut the blood flow off to it talk about painful I would have rather been in labor than to have the pain that my ovary caused. It took me 7wks to heal from the one in 2003 and about 5wks from the other and they were like a laproscopic incision in 2004 but that was due to infection in the incisions. After the one in 2003 is when I immediately had severe bladder pain.

Good Luck to all of you,
Lisa

Hello,

I am scheduled for a laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of tubes and ovaries) on Monday morning. I had to have an emergency D&C about a week ago because I was bleeding so heavily. My hemoglobin had dropped down to 9 and then 8 and I had to have two blood transfusions. I had spotting all throughout the month before that daily and am still having spotting. The doctor did an endometrial biopsy and it came back with atypical cells twice. They do not think it is cancer, but they cannot pinpoint what it is. They are doing more tests on it. My uterus is also very abnormally shaped and full of fibroids and my doctor feels it is going to happen again and the D&C was just a temporary fix to stop the heavy bleeding. My daughter gets married January 8, so we decided to do it now so I have time to heal before the wedding. I am hearing now that women are having more IC pain after the hysterectomy. and I am scared to death. Has anyone had their bladder stay the same or get better? I am also debating on the bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. My left ovary has a big cyst on it, so am thinking I should have that one removed for sure. I don't know if I should keep or get rid of the other and go on hormone replacement. I will be 49 in January and my doctor says I will be in menopause probably soon anyway and the ovary will stop producing hormones then. He said we can always go on hormone replacement. My dad had a heart attck in his mid 50s, so am afraid I would be at higher risk if they are both removed. I am also scheduled for a vulvoplasty for my vestibulities. Any input is greatly appreciated.
