First, I want to say hello..my first time post..
I was scheduled this morning for my cysto on 3/08..
I come home and one small problem..
I forgot I start my monthly around that time..is it a big deal if I have my period during this procedure..
Part of me of course is nervous..and worried about the after affects..
I need to call the insurance company to get pre-authorization and need to know the answer so I can get everything done..
I left a message on the nurse's voicemail, but figured I would try here as well for a possibly quicker answer..
TIA! :)
Ruth

I wondered that too when I had mine and my uro said it usually isnt a problem unless you are bleeding like out of control. So I wasnt really too worried about it, but then I didnt start mine, so it was okay. I think you will be fine, if you do start then. Also, don't worry about the cysto, because it will be fine, it doesn't hurt too bad. I had one in Jan and I walked out and went to dinner afterwards. Unless you are having the hydro, I didn't think it was bad.
Good luck and let us know how it goes
Love Sarah

i just had one feb 8 and i was having my mthly. they said its no big deal. I hope all goes well for you and try to relax everything is going to be okay. you will be sore for a while but hopefully this will help you.
is this in the doctor office treatment or out pat? where they do it while your a sleep.
in a lot of cases the hydro/cysto has helped some people go into remission. I'm just guessing he is doing the hydro if he is doing it in the hosp more then likely he will be doing that too.
many warm wishes headed you way
keep us posted

I so appreciate it..
I tried calling my insurance co to pre-cert. and now I need the codes..
I figured such a big hospital would do that for me..
Now I need to try and get a hold of them again.. :headbang:
This new Uro offered pelvic therapy first, but I really do want to know if I have IC..now I wonder if I'm doing the right thing..
I do have abnormally tight pelvic muscles, which either is a symptom of the IC, or causes the IC from what I've read??
But, I guess I need to know..
And yes, the procedure is being done at the University of Chicago Hospital..
Thanks so much.
Ruth
Edited to add..I have already cruised the site, it's awesome..
I take Pre-lief and lost of Azo-Standard pills..have cried many a time walking out of the dr. after a neg. urine dip, have had symptoms for over 5 years now..this new Uro is awesome..

Zoolady, good luck on the diagnosis. sometimes it's good to "name" the pain, then deal with the disease from there.
I had my Cysto w/ Hydro Jan. 7 with a laparoscopy to check for endometriosis. (they found pelvic congestive syndrome instead - just as bad, if not worse) Anyway, the test brought on my period early and heavy, so I don't think it's much of a problem if you've already started. Double check with the nurses, though.
Take a pillow to hold on your tender tummy on the ride home, and a bag...just incase the anesthesia (sp?) is not your friend.... :toilet: Stock up on crackers and Ginger Ale if you think you might be sensitive to it. Not everyone is, just the lucky ones like myself.
Good luck!

Thanks for the replies..I am indeed allergic to anesthesia(sp)..So I WILL ask for anti-nausea medicine..Just getting nervous of course, knowing there's a chance of being more miserable..

I am pretty new to all of this, and I am not sure where to post...Anyway, I finally got someone to listen to me, and my uro is going to do some "cysto" work in the near future. My question is, what is the difference between a regular cysto and hydro. Do you need hydro to tell if it is IC? I really want to know what is wrong with me? Do most people go through the regular cysto first? Any info would be helpful!! Thanks.

oh yeah- another question...since I have "good days" and "bad days" what if the cysto is done on a "good day?" Will the signs of IC still show up?

When a cystoscopy is done in the doctor's office, the instrument is inserted and the bladder is filled with water so the doctor can see the bladder lining. While such things as tumors can be seen, IC usually cannot.

Hydrodistention is done in a hospital with anesthesia. The procedure is sometimes called "over-distention" because the bladder is actually stretched. It's when it's stretched that the pinpoint bleeding that usually says "IC" happens.

You can read about both procedures in the Patient Handbook at http://www.ic-network.com/handbook

:welcome: to both zoolady and theoutlaw! :)

Outlaw, Donna's given you great advice -- please read the Patient Handbook she gave you the link too. It's an extremely comprehensive document that has information on all matters re: IC -- from diagnostic methods, to treatments, to self-help strategies, it's ALL there.

To both of you: you have found a great site for support. Please feel free to continue posting with any questions you may have. While we cannot substitute for your doctor's opinion, we can share our experiences and thoughts. :)

hi there! I just had my first cysto yesterday too...

also, my pelvic floor muscles are extremely tight as well and i've just had my 2nd appt for physical therapy and everyone seems to think that this is going to be the answer.

how long have you had your problem? do they know what it is? and have you tried any treatments that have worked? just curious b/c i saw some similarities with things you posted... hope your appt goes well

Hi, Jaded.
I hope you're faring better than I, I still have my catheter in until tomorrow..they're awaiting results from the biopsy for the IC diagnosis, although I'm not sure what will happen from there. My muscles could be related or the cause of my problems, I opted for the cysto to be sure, and right now it's inconclusive. The Drs. told me it's a process of elimination for an IC diagnosis. I have had problems for several years, since I was 26 or so, I'm going to be 37. I hope they get us the answers we seek, I'll keep positive thoughts for you too! :)
