Since I went back to pesco-vegetarian, I'm trying to make sure I get my protein by eating complementary proteins. I only eat fish a couple of times a week, and hardly ever an egg. I was thinking of cooking up some red beans and rice. Has anyone had a problem with red beans making them flare up? Thanks! :grouphug:

if you can eat black beans, I like to mix them with corn, add some coriander and cilantro, and then put them over rice. it's simple but very good.

on another note, it's a myth that you have to combine proteins in one meal, just so long as you combine them through the day.

Thanks-and (((Desolationangel)))..I did read that somewhere, that the proteins can be scattered throughout the day. I am keeping track of my daily protein intake, just to make sure I get the hang of it and do it right. My understanding is..as long as I'm mixing it up through the day, I should be ok? For instance today, I had the Kashi Good Friends cereal (loaded with granola and wheat etc.) with organic milk for breakfast. Then for lunch I had 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 16 wheat thins, and 2 cups of organic milk. Dinner will be fettucini with alfredo sauce, a slice of bread and a cup of milk. I added it all up and it totals about 50 grams of protein. I'm still learning, hoping I'm doing this right. :dizzy: I am trying to make up for the fact that the ONLY fruit I can eat are pears. I've been steaming lots of zucchini, squash, etc. for the extra vitamin C. I do get alot of protein from dairy, but I'm throwing in the grains and pasta etc. where I can. I bought some beans and rice, just haven't tried it yet. Also, I'm going to buy some lentils, I haven't tried them before. Does anyone know, what part of the grocery store would I find lentils? Are they in the canned vegetable aisle or what? (I saw they come canned and dried on the internet) They say they are high in protein..yay. I would like to get more protein from other sources than dairy. I am in a smallish town..we don't have a large health food store around here. There is an organic section at Kroger but it's limited.

That sounds good. Truthfully most people get more protein than they need anyway (50 grams is about right.) The average American consumes 10 times that daily!

Lentils should be with the canned beans, and you'll find lots of other yummy beans there. I don't know if you can eat very cooked onions, but Amy's Lentil Soup (NOT Lentil Vegetable soup, that one has tomato) is one of my favorite quick meals. I mix it with rice and it has a chili-like consistency.

Other sources of protein include wheat gluten (if you're not celiac, obviously) and eggs. I don't really like eggs but I do eat omelettes on occasion.

Good luck! If you want ideas of what an IC veggie could possibly eat, just ask!
