Has anyone ever had hydrodistention done in the urologist's office? I'm really nervous, but the urologist must know what he is doing. I had my first cysto done in the office, then in June 2004, I had hydrodistention/cysto at the hospital under anesthesia. At my trip to the urologist today, he said he wants to do hydrodistention by giving me extra numbing in the bladder and slowing stretching my bladder with water, but not to the point like the hospital. He said he would stop if I felt pain. Also, I would have to be sure I had a ride home.

I haven't heard of this. Personally, I wouldn't do it without being in the hospital. It sounds barbaric. Maybe you should check this doctor's record on your state's licensing board -- never hurts.

I am not sure I would get a second opinion.. I dont want to tell you the wrong thing but I thought hydro had to be done under anesthesia.

I had my biopsy done in the Uro's office. It was 20 years ago so I can not give you all the details. He did a cysto and if my memory is still working I think he did a partial hydro.
I had already had a cysto and hydro in the hospital a few years before that and had a very bad experience so both my doctor and I decided it was not a good idea to do that again. This is the reason we went with an in office procedure for the biopsy. I took valium before going and did have a ride home. The worst part was the anxiety ahead of time. I got through it well.
You did not really say why he is doing another so soon. I would question that.

You might ask if he plans to over distend your bladder. He may be just going to measure your capacity. If he's going to do an over-distention, you would need an anesthetic. To do it without anesthesia would be horribly painful.

I agree with Donna -- you may want to ask him some questions before committing to this procedure. Just ask exactly what he plans to do, step by step, and also ask what information he hopes to get out of the procedure. If there's anything you do not like or that makes you uncomfortable about his answers, it's definitely okay to say "No" and seek a second opinion. Remember, it is YOUR body, and you have the ultimate say in what people (including doctors) do to it!!! :grouphug:

Thank you everyone for your replies. The cysto I had in the uro's office was in April 2004, some water was put into my bladder. The uro knows that I only have a 1/3 bladder capacity of a normal bladder. When he told me last year that he was going to overdistend my bladder, he said it would be done in the hospital because it needed to be done under anesthesia because of the pain. The hydro last year did not do anything for me. He wants to check if anything has changed since the last cystoscopy. I know the cysto itself wasn't fun in the uro's office because my urethra did hurt for days afterwards. But, what scares me now, is the uro's words "I want to do a hydrodistention in the office and we would give you extra numbing". Now, I wonder, is he going to slightly put in more water than the last office cysto or what? I will have to write this question down. And, to say "yes" I should get a ride home, makes me wonder more. Sometimes, when I am being told something, I don't really start thinking about it until after I have gone home. I am getting heparin instills monthly since the uro said I only have mild IC. But, I am still getting a lot of pelvic pain every week. I keep a pain chart and it doesn't look pretty. I tried taking Elmiron, but I'm the one who posted the thread about having a swollen throat feeling. If I don't like what the uro tells me about this hydro he plans to do, I just won't do it. I am planning to call my primary care doctor and ask to see another uro for a second opinion. Unfortunately, there are no female uro's in my medical group.

I had my cysto/hydro/bio done in the office. My urologist has his own surgery suite there and anesthesiaologist(sp). I was out completely for that and also for the hydro done back in December. I had to have someone drive me home cause I had so much drugs in me so I wouldn't feel anything at all. That is a unique situation as most urologist do not have a surgery suite in the office that I am aware of.

My uro does not have any surgery suite. I would be totally awake. The more I read up on hydrodistention, the more I worry about any pain. I know I felt okay for hours after my June procedure, but the moment the pain meds wore off, I felt awful.
