My Dr. just told me to continue taking Elmiron. I don't think any one else on here has done that. No one that I have read about anyhow. Does any one know anything about that? I worry that it could cause less noticeable defects. I'm a little worried :hmm:

Sherry, I was high risk and not allowed to take The Elmiron, but everyone's OB is different, if you trust his/her opinion go for it.

Leslie, I'm high risk too, but I don't know what that has to do with taking Elmiron. Isn't the potential problem that the Elmiron will be transmitted to the fetus? That would be the same with both a high risk pregnancy and a normal pregnancy, wouldn't it?

I know that it is a mild blood thinner, like Motrin. Is that the broblem? I know that when I was on Motrin for contractions, my Peri had to check my amniotic fluid by ultrasound every week. I suppose Elmiron could pose similar risks.

I guess I just thought the problem would be damage to the fetus, which would be the same with everyone. That is my concern. I don't think they have done tests on pregnant women, for obviuos ethical reasons.

And I am not sure I trust my doctor. I am not sure that he, as a regular ob, knows enough about IC. Perhaps I am just being paranoid. I am not worried about a miscarriage, because I have never had one, I am worried about birth defects.

Thanks for your input!

Sherry, I was just told that they prefer not to use it, as no real proof as to what it may or may not do to the fetus. So after consults with my URO and he consulted with other IC specialist, we decided not to use it.

I stopped taking Elmiron when I knew I was preganant. My Uro also agreed that I stop taking it but advised that if my IC acts up to go and have the Elmiron instills right into the bladder through a cath.

I have taken myself off of the Elmiron even though my Dr. told me to continue taking it. It is a shame, though, because I had no side effects and I really felt like it was helping. This pregnancy just took me by surprise.

I have been considering going back to instills, but last time they were horribly painful, and gave me an infection. Is it worth it?
