Hello, everyone
This is my first posting. I am 11 weeks pregnant and so far my ic symptoms have gotten worse. I work part time as a preschool teacher, but have to take time off right now because I am constantly in the bathroom. I am so jealous of the women that go in remission during pregnancy. Has anyone had symptoms improve in the second trimester even if they were worse in the first trimester? I also have this coughing due to chronic allergies and some asthma symptoms. The coughing is putting an added strain on my bladder. I am worried about what the ic will be like after the pregnancy. Anyone with a good pregnant experience out there?

I don't have experience with pregnancy with IC, but I do know that a lot of pregnant women feel sooooo much better in the 2nd trimester when the hormones have sorted out some. Maybe this will be the case for you, too, with IC symptoms? Hormones play such a big role for many of us with IC...
Hope you feel better soon. :kissing:

Hi Lenia,
Congratulations on your wonderful news, and I'm sorry you're having problems with your IC. I haven't been pregnant with IC, but have read several stories and experiences that people have posted on this site. One of the moderators actually kept a pregnancy journal. Here's the link:

Also, maybe try using the "search" feature located near the top of the main message boards page. Take care and hopefully you will go into remission soon!

The moderator Journal is a wonderful thing to look at, but keep in mind every pregnancy is different. So don't get excited or down about anything you read. You are an iindividual and so is your pregnancy.

Hello,
I just wanted to let you know that I had the same thing happen. I was taking 400 mg Elmiron, 10 mg Elavil, and Urised as needed when I became pregnant. I quit the meds as soon as the test was postive, and about 2-3 weeks after that my IC went crazy. The worsening seemed to really coincide with when I started getting really nauseous (about 6 weeks). My IC was worse then it had ever been. My main problem is pain and a constant cramping/burning feeling, along with an increase in frequency (which for me I think was related to pregnancy). This is my second child, but I didn't have IC with the first.
I am now almost 20 weeks and things have gotten MUCH BETTER. The IC started getting better for me at around 13-14 weeks, just as my nausea was starting to dissipate. The burning and frequency decreased. I am by no means in a remission, but things are tolerable. In addition to drinking a lot of water, using Prelief, and really watching the diet, one thing that works for me is to drink milk when I start to feel that bladder burn. Another thing that helps me (and was fine with my OB) was to take Carlson's liquid fish oil daily (NOT COD LIVER OIL THOUGH..BAD IN PREGNANCY). It has anti-inflammatory properties and, though I am usually not a supplement taker, this really helps. I can't even take the prenatal vitamins (other than just plain folic acid), and I have tried all the ones with Ester C, etc.
With all that said, I am only around 20 weeks, so I am not sure what the rest of the pregnancy has instore for me. I just feel like if I can just get through this second trimester feeling decent, then by the third trimester I know that I am almost done. That first trimester was REALLY HARD, I kept thinking I couldn't make it through 40 weeks feeling like I was.
I wish you the best and hope that you are feeling better soon.

I am 9 and 1/2 weeks. My IC is pretty bad. I am having trouble getting the urine out and ofcourse peeing every two seconds. With my last pregnancy it didn't seem nearly as bad. Not having a great time of it this time. I guess every pregnancy can be different. That is what I hear.....
good luck and hope you feel better soon. I hear the second trimester is often better.

Congrats Lenia. So sorry to hear that your IC is acting up. Being pregnant is suppose to be joyous. Hopefully things will settle down with your IC in the 2 trimester. Are you taking anything? I am almost 11 weeks along and my uro advised me that if my IC does get worse that I could do the Elmiron intstalls. Where they install it directly into the bladder through a cath. I do have flares every now and then but at least for me I know that option is out there. It is a once a week treatment for me.

I was thinking the same thing. Apparantly in the second trimester your body starts producing the "relaxin" hormone and it sort of relaxes everything! Makes sense then that things may yet calm down...

Thanks everyone for your support and kind words. I am 13 weeks now. Things are the same, but I am hoping they will get better. It is so hard to sleep with all the trips to the bathroom. I wish I could sleep through even 4 or 5 hours uninterrupted from my bladder. Also, other health issues are bothersome too and it's easy to get depressed. Anyone out there struggling with other medical issues in addition to the ic? I guess we have to hang in there and not lose hope. Please pray for me.
Thank you all,
Lenia
