Hi all,
Just wondering what pain medications everyone uses - both over-the-counter and prescription pain killers? I use Panedeine or Nurofen/Nurofen Plus, depending on the type/extent of the pain but was wondering what everyone else uses.
Hope you are all well :grouphug:

Hi Kirsten
I use Nurofen Plus and my fall back for really bad pain, Panadeine Forte. The latter I use as sparelingly as possible as I don't like to ask for prescriptions too often.

Hi,
I am on Oxycontin 80mg which is the most powerful pain meds. we can get in Australia, they are a narcotic and can only be got thru a doctor with a script.
If you go down this path you must realise the consequences of using narcotic analgesics, but I have been on them for many years and I have a quality of life I could not have realised before.
Best of Luck
Ronald

Hi Kirsten,
Sorry it's taken so long to get an answer to you but better late than never HA HA. The only pain med I use is Panadine Forte. I try to only use it at night but sometimes have to take more during the night & occasionaly through the day if I'm in real trouble. I have kad to use them everyday for the last 10 years so I don't think my body responds very well to them anymore & I hate to think what it would be doing to my insides YUK!
Sometimes they still tend to make me feel sick, mainly through the day.
Several times when the pain has been out of control I have been to my Dr's or the ER & they have given me pethadine shots. I wish I had those at home, it's the only thing that make the pain actually go away for a while.
Good Luck
Andrea
Ronald I only noticed your post on the screen & you are another Aussie. I might be a bit late but :welcome: Nice to see an Aussie male here.

Hi Rosalie and Andrea and hi there Ronald, :welcome:
Thanks for the replies, guys. Since my post I have seen my GP who gave me a script for Panadeine Forte - after 2 weeks of pain and no relief from Nurofen or Nurofen Plus, I asked for something stronger and it was such a relief. I've had to use it 2 or 3 nights since then, but only one dose each time, so it has helped enormously.
I've always been reluctant to ask for stronger pain medications but since getting relief from one dose of the Panadeine Forte after days of no relief from the other meds I will be more forthright in asking. I've only taken Panadeine Forte a couple of times before (for sprains etc) but never thought it would be much good for the bladder as normal Panadeine generally doesn't help much.
Hope everyone is well - Andrea, I agree with better late than never! Good to see you.
Oh, and does anyone know what date the next Melbourne IC support group is? I want to go but need to check the dates and have it in the diary well in advance.
Kirsten,
After a few years of trying a variety of drugs, I ended up on Methadone (for pain) and Valium (pelvic floor dysfunction, urgency, and pain). They work together best. I have tried them both alone as well. The are also not very expensive here in the US, which is good for those without insurance coverage. They do have side effects, but it is better than being in the bed and bathroom most of the time.

Hi Kirsten,
What you need to realise is this thing is not going to go away anytime soon, so you need to get the best quality of life you can, if this means taking strong drugs then so be it.
If I was you do some research on the Internet about these drugs, that may help you understand how they work etc..
There are some good articles on the Mayo Clinic Website, also have a look at this site http://www.ichelp.org/, there is about 40 pages of drugs to look thru. There is sure to be something there that will help.

:welcome: Ronald, always good to see another Aussie on the boards, although I see you have been around for a while.
Have you thought of coming to the IC support meetings? I haven't the exact date as yet but I believe that it will be some time in March.
