View Full Version : Has anyone been told that C-section is preferable when you have IC?

I had a hard time pushing out my daugter two years ago and have always felt my IC worsened "because"? of that. This time I am thinking a c-section may be the best way to go for my bladder. I also have a mild cystocele that I don't really want to worsen.
Any thoughts? Greatly appreciated.

I am not under the impression that it would be preferable - my OB hasn't mentioned it at all so I'm planning for a vaginal birth. I'm not sure what a cystocele is so I can't offer any opinion there. What has your OB said about this option?
My only thought is that abdominal surgery seems to trigger IC for some people. My IC started one month after my second c-section. But I don't know if once you have it that a c-section would make it worse. ???? I really don't know.
Would pushing make the cystocele worse? If it did can they repair it? I don't know much at all about cystoceles.

I was told that a c-section may be a better choice for me, but we did try for a vaginal birth ( I also was being induced 2 weeks early) but after a day & a half in labor we had no other choice. I don't feel that it has my IC any worse since then.

A cystocele is when your bladder or bowel. In my case I think more bladder is dropped down and almost hangs out. (yuck) I have read that vaginal birth does make it worse if you have one. So I am thinking... maybe have the C-section and avoid making it worse, or have the baby vaginally and then have to go through surgery 8 or so months later to have my cysto repaired. I was told mine is between mild and moderate. It hangs just to the opening. (yuck). I know c-section is major in itself and recovery time is longer though. I have not discussed with my OB yet as I don't see her until into the second month. For now it is my regular family doc. He doesn't seem to know his left foot from his right.

I have a grade 3 cystocele after pushing for 4 hours and one huge tear--into my rectum. I had a rectocele and a fistula too and they told me that a c-section was my only option. I have had the fistula and rectocele repaired but am having the cystocele repaired soon. It makes sense that pushing would make them bulge worse. Of course the OB would be the expert.

Babs RN,
Can you pee ok? With that grade 3 cystocele? I find myself that since having my daughter peeing is alot harder.

I have alot of trouble starting my stream and completely emptying. My urethra is detached so I spray alot too. Cute, huh? We think since I retain due to the cystocele that it is the cause of my frequent UTI's. Can't wait to get the sucker fixed.

I dont know the answer, but found this link...I think I have an issue with rectocele since last labor, but try to ignore it 18 yrs later. :( Hope this is helpful...seems to have some mention of labor/delivery:

Sounds like a c-section may be the better option if the pushing during a vaginal delivery would almost definitely make the cystocele worse. ????

I had already had 2 c-sections so the third was not really a option, but my OB thought it would be alot easier onme to deal with.

:hi: My ob/gyn highly recommended I have a c-section because it will may be easier on my IC. But I had my daughter through c-section after a very long & difficult labor and went into shock afterwards. So one of the main reason it was recommended is because I had a c-section before & a difficult labor. So you may have a harder time convincing your doc that you need a c-section if you had a natural birth before.
My uro told me that if I could go natural just because IC patients have a difficult time healing after surgery. My doc has told me that I should plan to be in the hospital for at the most two weeks just because I tend not to heal very well.
I guess it really depends on how quickly you heal. If you are a slow healer because of your IC I would recommend trying to go natural.

I may be misguided, but I really feel like my first delivery either brought on or exaccerbated my IC. The 26 hours of labor and 3 hours of pushing really screwed me up. I had two more after that one and am now pregnant with my fourth child. I am terrified of pushing that long again, and intend to demand a c-cection. That is my view of things anyhow. Good luck!
