Hi all,
My 10 year little (to me) is really sick..... He has strep throat finished antibiotic day before yesterday came home from school in tears he never cries.. Said his throat hurt worse than ever. We called the doctor he had a temp pretty low 100.5 but still had one tummy ache and soar throat did the rapid culture which was neg. but sent it to lab.. Today he fever is 102 his eyes are like glass and he is very groggy like.. poor guy he said they went on afield trip yesterday had no clue school never notified me or I didnot get the letter but he said kids were vomiting on the bus and I know several kids in his class have strep as well as his teacher...My concern was we asked the doctor if the antbiotics he was on would interfer with the strep culture at first he said it would out of his system and we said he just finished them yesterday and he said maybe wait till Monday to get it back.. Boy oh boy.. Looks like we may need to re culture him. I feel so abd when they dont feel good

Kelly,
I'm sorry your little boy is so ill!!! :( The ages of 8-16 were awful for my continually irritate tonsils. I was always getting strep throat, and one year it turned into scarlet fever. All I can remember is being an interesting shade of crimson, and not being conscious for days!! My temp rocketed up to 105, and my mom was by my bedside for days.
I am sure your boy will be just fine!! After all, he's got a great mom like you looking after him. ;) Keep us posted, he may just need a different antibiotic to combat this.
Hugs,
Jess

Strep and ears Mom here-the good news is they do outgrow it....though I must tell you my youngest was always sick. When sent to a specialist finally at age 11, he asked me to look in her throat, looked normal to me...he was shocked I wasn't alarmed at the swelling in the back of her throat, I said I had been several times, but the pediatricians assured me it was normal-nope, immediately scheduled tonsilectomy and adnoid removal...she is now the healthiest of all of us.
It sounds as if your son either got a secondary infection, or also picked up a viral one along the way...not fun. Make sure he has no neck pain and can bend his head forward and touch his chin to his chest...just to be on the safe side. I would be persistent since he is just off an antibiotic, it may not have hit the strain. My kids, the oldest I think, needed to be on Septra(sulpha base) for extended periods, to enhance antib response and as a preventitive measure.
Good luck and remember who knows him best, worst case they get sick of your calls-so what? Poor baby...lots of popsicles and pedialyte if you can get it into him. :)

OHH Poor guy, my 8 year old just got over strep and her tummy was a mess, she threw up for 2 days. Her quick strep test was neg also, but culture was positive. Hope her gets some rest and feels better.

My oldest son now 12 did have his tonils out @ 10 our pediatrician is very against having tonsils out.. WE had to insist with the him and may have to do the same with this little guy. I also had my tonsils out @ 5 and tubes in ears... Never boys have had any problems with ears as I did but lots of strep for both..
Were keeping a close eye on the little guy and his fever is slowly going down its up and down right now we will see how he is in morning...

Kelly,
Usually fevers tend to go up at night. Maybe a good night's sleep and plenty of liquids will help to bring the fever down.

Kelly, my oldest had her tonsils out at age 5 and has not had anymore strep wince, however my 8 year old gets it all the time and our new family Dr, isn't big on removing them either. I would love to have it done. I willnever forget when my oldest came out of the recovery room, and I ask her how she was and she glared at me and said" I hate you" I felt like such a smuck for doing that to her LOL.

My mom said that when she was 5, it was mandatory that you get your tonsils taken out. Too bad they don't do that anymore. I still wrestle with tonsil problems to this day...whenever the weather changes, they inflame and get white spots all over them. My doctors all comment on how huge they are--but no one is willing to take them out! (especially now that I am an 'adult' LOL)
The point to all my rambling? If your son is a chronic tonsil patient and they offer to take his tonsils out--please consider doing so! I hate all the earaches, white spots, and sore throats I get to this day!
Ok so 'nough of that...how is your son today??

My 12 year old was not happy with us either... I felt terrible and his recovery time was longer than normal but he's been knock on wood healthy ever since..The lttle guy's temp is now this morning 101.3 so were still doing tylenol every 4 hours.

Maybe alternate Childrens Motrin and Tylenol, that seems to help alot more with the fever. Hugs to the little guy.

Thanks for suggestion huggs,
Kell

Oh. I hope he feels better soon. I can't stand it when mine are sick either. I feel so sick (to my stomach) when they are sick or hurt.
