Hello...I had a big IBS attack today. It felt like a vice was squeezing my intestines, and the cramping was horrid! I went to try and go to the bathroom, but nothing happened.
Second time I had excruciating pains and cramps, and managed to get out a small, rock hard bowel.
Third time, still VERY bad cramping, but I emptied my intestines, then after several hard bowels, out came the loose stuff... and all pain went away.
Does this happen to anyone else?? If so, why does that happen?? Thanks all!! :) Charlotte

Do you take pain meds? Sometimes one of their side-effects is constipation. When I have a severe IBS attack, I have unrelenting cramping and lots of diarrhea....another great thing about this disease.........no two patients and their symptoms are alike........very much like IC.

I'm glad you feel better now. :grouphug:

Like Jaime, I have IBS-D. IBS is SO PAINFUL!!!!! For me I get awful cramps where I am so doubled over, and then someone opens the flood gates and I spend my day in the bathroom. Yeesh!!

My best friend is Immodium D - Advanced....I highly recommend it and so does my GI Dr. I even take it on anticipation of being away from home. One dose and I am good to go! Sorry, no pun intended....well, maybe a little. :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:

I am an imodium regular. I get intense cramps and then... wham! It is horrid. Good days and bad days....

I find that my bladder can set off the bowel or vis versa.

Tracey,

Isn't it odd how when one flares, the other one does, too? I kind of just let my IBS-D ride itself out. I figure if my body is trying so desperately to get rid of it, then I should let it run it's course. Sometimes I break down and take a bunch of Pepto...and oddly enough, it works...well, most of the time. I think I might look into immodium for when I travel.

Jess214,

What is IBS-D? What does the D stand for? Just wondered. Something obvious I'll bet. I cannot stand going and going so I usually take Imodium. I find if I stop it with imodium then my bladder feels a little better.

I have horrid IBS which swings wildly from diharrea to constipation and back again. I get horrible cramps and shooting pains in my pelvis which I never know if it's bowel or bladder. and yep, when one flares so does the other.

Slippery elm is fantastic for diahrrea . You get it from the health food store or supermarket in either powder or capsule form. I wouldn't be without it!!

I wondered last night when I was having my IBS attack, if IC and IBS were corralated. My guess is that if there is something acidic, or something else that our body doesn't agree with, it affects our whole internal system? Not only our bowels, but our urine?? Man....just caused by one thing!!! How miserable!

Thanks all for your help in this matter! I don't feel so alone. :) Charlotte

Hello!
I also get terrible cramps and then nothing in the bathroom, (sorry if this sounds gross) but I try not to push too hard , besides even pushing hurts, because I DO NOT want to get hemorrhoids! I usually make some green tea (the heat helps soften things up!) or make my boyfriend make it, and after a few cups I grab a magazine, go into the bathroom and, like someone else said here, spend the rest of the afternoon in there! The worst time when I get it is when I wake up from it, I get sweaty and nauseaus and dizzy the feeling is like someone wringing out my insides. I put a few towels in my lap and a damp cloth over my head, so I can lay my head down (when i'm on the toilet) Maybe try the elimination diet, sometimes mine gets triggered by a sucession of foods like oils and dairy, but only if I eat them over a period of time (Christmas, Easter, ect.).
I think I am lucky in that I am pretty good at controlling my IBS, though I have to make an effort to eat fibre daily as well as plenty of green tea so that there is never a build up in my system. Talk to your doc. before you do anything, but I suggest trying to keep yourself as regular as possible. When I was having a couple bowel movements a day I avoided IBS for about 2 months. Although sometimes when I "go" I wonder where all this stuff is coming from, do I really eat that much!? Anyway, talk to your doc. and good luck!

Thanks for this post, I am trying to do a little "research" as I think I may be suffering from IBS, not sure, but everything I keep experiencing and reading about are leading me in that direction... I actually think I have been dealing with it my whole life in one way or another, and now with the IC and all the meds, I think it's rearing it's head again!!

Just wanted to say thanks!
Tracey :)

I had the same problem but after taking the algonot for 3 days it all stopped. No pain at all when I go and I have a much easier time of it.

Have you ever tried Robinul? It helps me a lot with the cramps. I have problems with the diarrhea, so I don't know if it also helps with constipation. Ask you Dr. about it. The only problem is that it makes my mouth really dry. I have to cut my pill in half and spread it out over the day so it doesn't dry me out as bad.
