Hello and happy holidays-
Has anyone else had problems with bladder irritability when using mediacations for yeast infections? My bladder seems to spasm about 5 minutes after I insert the medication.
Thanks,
Traci

Well that is new to me....have you tried getting a the oral presciption??? There are many other ways to treat Yeast Infections and we all may react to something few do so if it is bothering you maybe you should try a different way to treat your yeast infection. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks. Yes, I used to take Diflucon. But, the doctor say's that this is a very risistant type. I just had surgery 3 weeks ago, so that might be the problem also.
Thanks,

Here are some more ideas:
YEAST LIST: Boric Acid, Aci-gel (insert it at night, it maintains the ph of the vagina & yeast can't live when there's an acidic environment - or can use apple cider vinegar in water) and also washing externally with tea-tree oil diluted in water. I also used acidopholous tablets (inserted at night) plus taking high amounts orally. This works every time for me and now the yeast is a thing of the past. If I ever feel the itch starting, I use a wet towel with some tea-tree oil neat on it, to wipe around the anus and vulva, it stings a bit but it definitely works. AZO yeast, http://www.ghtbiz.net/rescue/nocandida/lead.html

Katrina-
Thanks. So, Aci-Gel is the Boric Acid mix? Can I get this at a health food store? Do you do this every night?
Thanks,

Hi Traci, looks like my copying and pasting sent up before I edited it....I had taken that info from someone else's post a long time ago....so it isn't me who does that. Rosebud acutually said that. Anyway no I don't think aci gel is boric acid mix and I don't do it everynight but Rosebud said she does. I don't know how to get it sorry. I often make lists all the time and take stuff from others....sorry to confuse you.

All internal yeast medications, cause me to flare too!!!!! I could just scream it hurts so bad!!
Seems like the Diflucan also increases my burning. But just suffer when I have too! It's works well!
I can't even stand tea tree directly on my skin. So puts some of the oil in a warm bath. I take acidophulus everyday. A powder and drink it!!
It can also be used internally, in a douche or mixed in plain yogurt!!
Also cut out sugar as much as possible! This is the hardest part with a limited diet!Good Luck! How your feeling better soon!

I tried Boric Acid and Tea Tree oil. They caused a major flare. Two days after I stopped using them (I couldn't sleep they caused my bladder to spasm so much), everything cleared up. Well, almost..... it seems that I had yeast in my urine culture. It really hurts to pee. So, I'm on Diflucan. I'm sure this med. will work for me. Thanks for all the information!

My physical therapist has asked that I eat at least one Danactive yogurt daily whenever I take antibiotics. She says it has live culture in it plus other another ingredient that is helpful to fight yeast infections.

:loco: This is driving me nuts, i am being treated with my 2nd round of antibodics for a uti and I still have burning when I urinate and burning just all the time.
I also got a prescription for Diflucan and have taken it also, and still the intense burning with a little bit of a itch. Is that what it means to flare(that what I thought it was) it is so uncomfortable and it been going on for 2 weeks since my surg(cysto/hydro). Also do you think drinking tap water could cause a flare up we moved 7months ago to a new town and I drink at least
8 8oz glasses of water a day. One more question how do you start a new thread I can't figure it out.

I'm so glad to see this post here. I've had a bad week. Flaring-- Possibly from the Prednisone I had to take last weekend for a bad rash. Then possibly from the yeast infection I got next. Then possibly from the Diflucan I had to take for the yeast infection. Had to stay home from work today on Pyridium & Darvocet. I didn't even realize how much pain I'd been in til the Darvocet kicked in and I wasn't in pain anymore. Sigh.
Of course now it's worn off & I feel crummy again. Don't know what to do, except drink water & hope this is all side effect related. I don't think I have a UTI - haven't had one in 30 years.
Does acidophilus bother your IC?
I was told that many people have to take Diflucan twice for a bad yeast infection. You take it once and then again three days later. (Everyone is different though and I'm sure opinions vary on this) Maybe it would be a good idea to be watchful for any discharge or itching that would indicate that a yeast infection is still there and get re-tested quickly. Apparently you have to be ultra diligent when it comes to yeast infection and/or UTI because this stuff is brutally painful for us. Constipation is bad too. It seems like everything I eat is to prevent UTI or yeast now: cranberry juice/water/yogurt. (I can have cranberry...many folks with these problems can't touch it) I have found that my current yeast infection re-activated my pelvic pain and I'm very upset about it. Also, my physical therapist who treats many, many folks with IC and/or pelvic pain problems some of whom have issues with bladder infections says that eating the yogurt with live cultures regularly (She likes the DanActive brand by Dannon) does help a little and every little bit counts. There is another thread here where some folks suggest taking Citiracal (calcium) for other help in the area in terms of pain (the recommended dosage would be good for us all I'm sure). Icing the area can be helpful as well. If you scroll to the bottom, you will see a box called Similar Threads and you can see what other people have had to say about yeast infections. Best of luck. I know for me this has been really hard and I am very frustrated. Hang in there. Prayers for us both.
p.s. Many people here recommend bottled water only. I have heard folks who are very chronic particularly like Evian.

I have to take 4 pills of Diflucan practically every month.
No one can figure out why. I've tried everything under the sun. I feel like a freak of nature of something!
Diflucan is the only thing that works, and that doesn't cause a flare up.
My problem is, is that my insurance won't cover 4 pills every month. It only covers one. The others I pay full price for. Fun times.
Do I have awful insurance, or is this just how things go?
I ended up having to take three Difulcan total to get rid of my yeast infection which was current when I first noticed this thread. My doc had originallygiven me two, which is what I had to take last time to get rid of one. So, perhaps this concept of some folks needing to take more than one is not all that uncommon. ALSO, I seem to have MORE pelvic pain when I took my prescription!!! When I read this post, I saw that others might experience this. I have said it before and I'll probably say it again...I'm VERY frustrated by this condition. (At least the yeast seems to be gone!)

I started getting yeast infections about 4 years ago, around the same time my IC flared up like crazy and I was finally diagnosed.
I started off taking one Diflucan, and that always cleared things up.
When I kept getting reaccuring infections, my doctor told me to take two and maybe that would stop the re-accurance.
That worked wonderfully, except for I now needed 2 to fully get rid of it.
SO, my doctor told me take 3 ... and so on and so on. Now I'm up to 4.
So, if anyone's genious doctor tries to up your dosage in the hopes that it will get rid of reaccuring yeast infections .... beware!
I'm not on antibiotics though, do you think regular IC meds can cause this?

Does anyone else get major headaches from taking Diflucan? Yikes! I have enough problems without that too. Anyway, the Diflucan is the only thing that works for me for yeast; the creams stopped working long ago, and they also all burn like crazy, causing major redness that is as bad and uncomfortable as the yeast infection. I am about ready to take my second Diflucan because I want to be SURE I get rid of this infection right away.

It is a strong medicine....so I wouldn't surprise me if some get a headache.....we are all so different. I know my doc has been worried at times about me taking the diflucan and how it affects me. Meds...grrr
HI J--
Just a thought, my doctor has written appeals to the insurance company for me when they haven't covered things I've needed and they've then covered it. The key seems to be to have your doctor state it is "medically necessary" for you to have it. Hope maybe that works for you?

Diflucan makes me dizzy but sure helps the yeast! I had to take it every week after having to live on Cipro for months. So I can sympathize, it was scary and OOOWWW did it add to my burning!!!!!!!!!!!Once I started high doses of acidophilus both by mouth and in the vagina I could go down to once a month. I found that I could put my lidocaine in a acidophilus douche and it helped my pain too! Sometimes added collidal silver too! Take the acidophulis first thing in the morning and last thing at night on an empty stomache and it works better! I am on Silverbiotics now and get an UTI as soon as I try to come down! Silverbiotics also helps yeast infections and is natural, doesn't hurt the bladder. I don't have insurance so it is all out of pocket!
So glad we have Diflucan though and really thankful they came out with a generic!

I also get recurring yeast infections and they are driving me crazy. I think I am immune to the OTC meds like monistat. Even Diflucan takes 2 pills to work. I have gone to 4 stores today to look for the boric acid?? Can anyone tell me where to get it. I tried wallgreens, gnc, cvs and a vitamin shop. I am going to attempt to make my own tablets if I can ever find the boric acid. What is acidophilus and how do I get some to cut down on the yeast??? Any responses would be wonderful.. Thank you :loco:
You can find acidophilus in most health food stores. Get the refrigerated kind - it means the bacteria is alive. Acidophilus is one of the "good" bacteria in our bodies that help keep yeast from overgrowing and causing infections.
The acidophilus comes in capsules - you just take it with a drink. There are other "probiotics", too - acidophilus is the one you hear about the most.

Acidophilus is live bacteria that prevent yeast and antibiotics kill! They are found in yogurt which we really are not supposed to eat, but can also be found in capsules and in powder form at the health food store! Yogurt especially wiht extra acidophilus in it can be put inside the vagina to help with yeast. It is a safe bladder supplement! Tea tree oil is another natural antifugal. I can only use a few drops in my bath water but it also really helps kill the yeast! You can buy it also at the health food store
I have never tried boric acid.
My physical therapist feels strongly that we should eat yogurt with live cultures on a frequent basis (at least a few times a week) and when we take antibiotics we should eat at least one daily. It wont cure a yeast infection, but it may help prevent one or keep it from becoming severe. BTW, I have found that I need to take at least two Diflucan tablets when I get a yeast infection. My doctor prescribed one tablet and I was to automatically take another one three days later. I'm going to automatically take a monistat tablet as well to be on the safe side when I take that first oral Diflucan tablet the next time I get a yeast infection. IMHO, it wont hurt and probably will be VERY helpful. I suspect these yeast infections take a stronghold and we have to be very assertive. However, I'm hoping that now that I'm eating more yogurt with live cultures...that my yeast problems will be less severe. Wish me luck.

To Marlana,
I too do not respond to OTC yeast preps so I go straight for the Diflucan now. I hate taking it! Talk about headaches, spaciness, and intestinal upset. But it's worth it to get rid of the yeast.
I found boric acid in a pharmacy some years ago. I had to ask the pharmacist where it was kept. I then put it in gelatin capsules that I got at the herb store. I was told to use one capsule in the vagina after intercourse to prevent yeast growth. Yeast definitely get stirred up by sexual activity. I remember it burned me (although others use it with no problem) so I stopped.
Acidophilus and other "good" bacteria are found in many yogurt brands, in liquids at health food stores, and also powdered in capsules. I have heard it's better to use the first two forms, as they are more "alive". My sister swore that she got rid of a bout of recurring vaginal yeast by eating daily yogurt. By the way, if someone tells you to put yogurt in the vagina, don't; there's too many other things in yogurt that just don't belong there!
Another "alternative cure" that I heard of some time ago is to insert one carefully peeled garlic clove in the vagina each day, carefully peeled so as not to nick the clove and release the burning juice. I never tried this.
Hope that helps! Good luck.

h Marlana, i tried the boric acid caps and they actually burned and bothered my ic too. Might be becauce my tissues were so raw from trying diff. things. Are you totally sure you have yeast? Or just the sympoms of yeast? I loved the comfort of gentian violet. VERY messy use gloved hands and apply otherwise your hands will look like a purple marker broke in your hands! I t is available behind the counter ant the pharmacy (because its messy anbd they want to warn you) . I even used it while I was wa iting for the diflucan to work. Very soothing to vag tissues. If you have a vag applicator like from monistat you can pour it in and use it that way. Lay down for awhile after since it is a liquid and old undies with a pad on. It worked much better for me than the creams or boric acid. If you ahve any qustions feel free to email me! Hope this helps! By the way., these instructions were given to me by my gyno :) Love, Debbie

Thanks Deb-Gail
I am glad there are alternatives to try. I now am fighting a baldder infection on top of everything. I found some bactrim I had that they gave me when they thought I had an infection so I popped one of those till I can get a hold of my uro tomorrow. I have felt ok the last 2 days from the yeast or what I think is yeast, but I am positive that getting on antibiotics will bring it raging back again. I am still looking for the boric acid but I am willing to try the purple stuff[that is my favorite color anyhow}!!! Thank you again for the info, I am sure it will be very useful.
