I'm not sure where to post this. I did reply to one of Jill's posts in the Announcement section, but also wanted to be sure to share it as a success story of sorts.
I was driving in my car today and was so completely surprised to hear a long commercial about IC. It described the illness to a tee with an lengthy explanation about Interstitial Cystitis and also said it's called IC for short. It detailed what the symptoms were and everything. It was on a local pop radio station (quite popular) and directed people to two different websites. I'm not sure what one of them was, but the other is allaboutic.com. It wasn't even one promoting a medication - however, I think the website itself is from the makers of Elmiron. I must say as I was driving I was estatic - you would have thought I won the lotto or something - I was just so happy someone was talking about it and my hope is that others will have a better understanding as to what we go through.

That's amazing!!!
It's so wonderful that all of this is happening suddenly. I realise that it's all because Ortho wants to make more money, but they're actually doing us a huge favor!

I've always wondered why the makers of Elmiron didn't advertise their product since there are probably many people who have IC and don't know it. It would be to everyone's benefit!

I just thought I'd mention that I heard the ad twice on my way to work today - I'm just amazed it's out there. Personally I think it's a pretty good start to making people aware. I was mistaken that it sends you to 2 different websites. It actually directs people to a phone number and a website. Since the website they send you to is linked to ortho, I'm sure it's from Elmiron - However, it never mentions Elmiron in the commercial - it just says: ask your doctor for prescription medication (or something like that anyways.)
May the publicity continue!

Cool, if everyone here could get 1 radio station in there area to play it, we could really get the word out.

Along the same line did any of you read about the research done by Dr. Lowell Parsons of the U of CA at San Diego? Based on testing of women in the medical school there he projects that there may be 25 - 30 million women in the US with IC, mostly undiagnosed. There is an older interview with Dr. Parsons on this website where he states much the same statistic. Even if he is only half right that represents a huge population of women who need to be reached. Even the medical profession does not seem to recognize the magnitude of the problem.

Wonderful!!
Great news!
On a similar note I was looking at a People mag. this month (during one of my many visits to a doc in the waiting room!), and I saw an ad that states:
'Your pelvic pain is tough to diagnose. It's even tougher to live with. It may be IC.'
It then goes on to describe the symptoms and sends you to a website -
www.allaboutIC.com
It is an ad from the drug company Ortho-McNeil.
I thought it was interesting being in a major publication like People.
:) Every little bit helps!

The All about IC site does have a section where it says "for more info on a prescription drug to treat IC click here" and that does take you to the Elmiron site... Good news that the word is slowly getting out there. Too bad the symptom survey doesn't include getting multiple instances of UTI symptoms with a negative bacteria culture. The symptoms listed will not catch people in early stages of developing IC, like myself, who do not yet have chronic pain or bladder damage.

That's fantastic news. I had actually heard from someone else that there was a commercial out about IC. The more public we can get it, the better!!! Well, hope you are enjoying the rain and warmer weather for as long as it lasts! ;)
best to you.
