I used the tens unit one time in physical therapy awhile back, but was thinking about asking my doc about getting one. Anyone have any advice about the unit and if it worked for you? Also, how and where do you get one? Are they available to rent or do you have to purchase them? And does insurance ususally cover it? Anything else you can tell me about it?

Insurance covered mine. It was a hassle to get insurance to cover supplies, but they eventually did it. I got mine through a physical therapist. Be very careful about proper skin care where the electrodes are placed. I had preventable problems & developed allergies, and they could've been avoided so easily.

I love my TENS unit. It helps me a lot with breaking the pain cycle. I got mine through my chiropractor and insurance paid some of it. I even use it on my lower neck/shoulder area when I have a tension headache!

I have a tens unit and it helps a lot with pain. My uro gave me my tens unit. I get to test it out for so long to see if I like it. My uro told me that my insurance would probably cover it, but they are only around $50.00. I would ask your uro about trying one out for a few weeks to see if it works for you. :) Chelsey

I see a physical therapist 3 times a week for a lower back injury. They were using a TENS unit on me during therapy. It was working so well I asked if people could ever use them at home. I was told yes and all the therapy company had to do was send a request to my doctor, for a prescription, and show it was medically necessary. Then my insurance company gave me a list on the phone of medical supply companies who accepted my insurance, and carried the unit in stock. Some of them only accepted 50% of the insurance, some had dropped it..I called around and found one who accepted 100% of my insurance. The normal cost on my unit was $420.00, so I was happy it was covered in full. It has a rechargeable battery, which insurance will pay for a new one if this battery ever becomes faulty. Also-I get free replacement pads for the electrodes once per month for life..I just go pick them up. If my TENS unit ever breaks or fails, they will repair or replace mine for free, for life or as long as I have this insurance. I guess all insurance companies have their own way of dealing with the expense..but mine is Tricare insurance through the military, and I was really shocked that they paid for it in full. I love my TENS unit. It has 4 pads and I usually put 2 on my pelvic area for bladder, and 2 on my lower back for the injury. :) I find it very relaxing. Good luck with yours-once the doctor or therapist decide you need one, they should walk you through how to get it. I'm not sure if they are available on a rental basis or not. Take care- :grouphug:

Before getting the Interstim I used my Tens therapy unit all the time. It was part of my physical therapy plan to help repair my Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. My insurance pain 100% of the machine, it was rented each month and paid by the insurance company. All I had to do was get a script from my MD and then the insurance and my PT did the rest. It was wonderful when I had it but now that I have the Interstim I can't use it any longer and had to send it back.

Still not sure I made the right choice going with the Interstim unit. Time will tell I guess.

Tracy

Good luck!
